I have configured routing on, but when I try to configure eigrp i get the message 'Protocol not in this image'.

Can I upgrade or does the protocol not work on this device?

EIGRP is not supported in the SMI (Base) image. You need to upgrade the image to the EMI version. This can be done on the same switch but there will be a cost to upgrading.
