Nexus 5596UP L3 Module

We have dual Nexus 5596UP running as Layer 2 only. All routing is done on a Cisco 2851. I will be installing a L3 module in both 5596's and having the Nexus switches become our core router. The 2851 will contine to route or WAN traffic.

Has anyone installed a L3 Module in a 5596UP that was only doing layer 2? What is the procedure and what do I need to be concerned about?

I am also going to enable OSPF on both Nexus.

Thanks for your feedback.

You can install the module and the chassis will still operate as normal.  You need to enable the Layer 3 license, which comes complimentary when the card is installed, can you start doing Layer 3.

Hello Dohoque,

As mentioned above by Leo. This is all you need to be concerned about.

But if you are looking for some additional documentation, you can find it here :

Hi,

Please note that the NEXUS 5500 with L3 module and Basic licence, the OSPF routing table is limited to 256 learned route only.

If you need more you need to get Enterprise license scale to 8000 routes.

Let me know about your design.
