Nexus 7k - migration from SUP1/F1/FAB1 to SUP2E/F3/FAB2

Hi,

We are planning to upgrade a centrel Nexus 7k DC VPC installation.

Today:

  • Redundant SUP-1
  • M1-32XP linecards
  • Fab-1 fabric moules (3)

Two nodes in VPC configuration with NxOS 5.2

New:

  • Redundant SUP-2E
  • F3-48XP linecards
  • Fab-2 fabric modules (5)
  • NxOS 7.2

The rough plan is to:

  • Bring down (shut off power) on VPC secondary node
  • Check that traffic flows via primary
  • Change Fabric modules, Supervisors (with NxOS 7.2 and config prepared) and linecards
  • Connect all cables
  • Bring up the upgraded node

Now we're half way with a VPC pair comprising different HW and SW. See below ...

Does this work? Can we get any strange problems here?

Then:

  • Bring down the other node
  • Check that traffic flows via the new upgraded node
  • Change Fabric modules, Supervisors and linecards
  • Connect all cables
  • Bring up the upgraded node

Test!

/Jorgen

Jorgen,

Above solution will not work as you have different modules in the setup.

1st setup running M1 modules

2nd setup you are replacing it with different sup and F3 modules

VPC cannot be build on different modules. (

Hi,

For clarification:

I am not going to mix different modules in the same chassi. I upgrade one chassi at a time.

Step 1 - Bring down chassi A and change all modules in chassi A

Step 2 - Bring up chassi A and connect it to chassi B (that has old M1 and Sup1) as an interim solution for a short time. (this is the criticial part).

Step 3 - Bring down chassi B and change all modules in chassi B

Step 4 - Bring up chassi B. Chassi A and B are up and connected via VPC

Did this work for you? We are getting ready to do the same thing and I had the same plan that you have :) Thanks!

Just wondering how this migration turned out. We are in the planning stage to migrate two Nexus 7k (no vPC) - migration from SUP1/FAB1/5.2(4) to SUP2/FAB2/6.2(20) and doing the process that you have outlined by shutting one of the N7K, swap Sup and Fab, start N7K, and restore config.
