Introduction

iPXE boot in ASR9K

Migration recommendation document for Cxr to Exr.

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/routers/asr9000/migration/guide/b-migration-to-ios-xr-64-bit/b...

Pre-requisite:

  • Needed only IOS XR 64-bit ISO image.

Example : “asr9k-mini-x64-6.2.3.iso

Caveat

Config will be lost we needed to save the configuration  in advance before migration  on  external server.

This can be done only on a RSP880 , RP2  and above .

Disk and hard disk would be formatted while migration  we needed to save the configuration  and relevant logs  externally .

When  IPXE Boot could be done :

  1. During migration from  C-xr to  E-xr (only using migration  script )

  2. Password recovery

  3. When router boot up fails with E-xr  .

  4. During Downgrade from 6225 and below  we needed to  do  Ipxe boot

IPXE Boot :

iPXE is a pre-boot execution environment that is embedded in the router and works at the BIOS level. iPXE is used to re-image the system, boot the router in case of boot failure or in the absence of a valid bootable partition.

Summary of Steps:

  1. Before your use the iPXE boot, ensure that config backup is taken in  advance to a tftp/ftp path to  load the config back  after the ipxe boot .
  2. Login to the System Admin console using the admin command.
  3. If router is unable to  boot then intiate an OIR of both RP (Active and Standby RP)
  4. After aborting  the boot process.  you  get the following options to  boot as   mentioned below and choose the option  4 for IPXE boot
  5. After  option  4 is selected please press CTRL+b as soon  as you  see this syslog  on  the router   “Selected external PXE “to  enter to  IPXE prompt <IPXE>
  6. Manually update IPXE  Rommon details before booting via FTP/TFTP:
  7. ENTER THE NEW PASSWORD  as prompted
  8. Standby RP will Sync with active RP  once  active RP is booted successfully .
  9. If standby RP  is not getting sync then press ctrl +C and select option 5 from boot.

Steps in details

Step 1:  Before your use the iPXE boot, ensure that config backup is taken in  advance to a tftp/ftp path to  load the config back  after the ipxe boot .

Step 2:   Login to the System Admin console using the admin command.

The following example shows the output of the command:

 sysadmin-vm:0_RSP0# hw-module location all reload

Tue Mar  6  08:12:47.605 UTC

Reload hardware module ? [no,yes] yes

result Card graceful reload request on all acknowledged.

sysadmin-vm:0_RSP0#

Step 3  :  If router is unable to  boot then intiate an OIR of both RP (Active and Standby RP)

Press  Ctrl +C as soon as you  see  this below log -

I am planning to clean install using front panel USB media.

Is the USB media format FAT32?
Should I save the eXR ISO Image in the Root directory of the USB media?
Can I select images to boot from multiple ISO files in the USB media? (Does it fail if there are multiple files?)

@sukala

Since you don't have any ROMMON variables configured, You need to select option 1 first (32 bit Classic), break & enter ROMMON, configure ROMMON IP/Mask etc, then reboot to the 64-bit boot menu again & then select Option 4. From there you can hit CTRL-B and enter iPXE.
