When along with the IOS XR upgrade you also want to upgrade the RP/RSP, you may decide to go for a pre-baked RP/RSP approach. You take the new RSP into the lab, install the desired IOS XR packages, take the RSP to a production site, power off the chassis, swap out the RSPs and power-on. This is a perfectly valid method. The purpose of this article is to highlight one consequence of this approach which at first sight may appear as unexpected: longer line card boot-up time on the first boot with the new RSPs.

Before the line cards in IOS XR platforms boots the IOS XR, the system makes a quick check to verify whether the IOS XR installation on the line card matches the one on the RSP. If they match, the line card will boot fast. If not, the line card has to download the new IOS XR installation from the RSP before it can boot. Therefore, the first boot upon RSP swap will be slow, but  the subsequent boots will be fast.

The syslog message sequence below includes a sample message that notifies the operator of the mismatch and the need to re-sync the IOS XR installation with the RSP. The overall line card boot time in this case was ~14 minutes.
