Important: This document is intended as a quick start guide and is NOT an official document for what is officially supported. The demo version of IOS XRv is offered without support and can be run on top of any hypervisor. For information regarding supported hypervisor for simulation/production deployment, please refer to the official Release Notes.

Running Cisco IOS XRv on VMware Fusion/Workstation

The following steps shows how to get IOS XRv running on VMware Fusion or Workstation. Screenshots are based on VMware Fusion running on Mac OS X.

Download IOS XRv

You may download IOS XRv from the following location

IOS XRv (5.1.1) Demo Image Download

https://upload.cisco.com/cgi-bin/swc/fileexg/main.cgi?CONTYPES=Cisco-IOS-XRv

Running XRv in VMware Fusion

1. Fire up VMware Fusion, select File > New > More Options.

Screen Shot 2014-02-13 at 21.57.09.jpg

2. Select Create a custom virtual machine.

Screen Shot 2014-02-13 at 21.58.06.jpg

3. Choose Other > Other option for Operating System.

Screen Shot 2014-02-13 at 22.04.29.jpg

4. Select Choose an existing virtual disk, pointing to the XRv image filename you have downloaded earlier.

Screen Shot 2014-02-13 at 22.06.10.jpg

5. Select Customize Settings. Allocation at least 3GB of memory to XRv Virtual Machine.

Screen Shot 2014-02-13 at 22.08.29.jpg

6. If you require IOS XRv Virtual Machine to be bridged to physical interface. Select the appropriate options below.

Screen Shot 2014-02-13 at 22.11.04.jpg

7. In VMware Fusion to add the serial ports for XRv you must manually edit the .vmx file before starting it. You must create at least one serial port, and up to four are supported. (The first acts as IOS XR console port, and the others provide ksh consoles.).

Click on Option+right-mouse click on VM > Open Config file in editor.

Screen Shot 2014-02-13 at 22.12.47.jpg

Then, add the following lines

ethernet0.virtualDEV = "e1000"

The XRv image requires the use of e1000 NIC, without the above you will not see any interfaces present on the XRv router.

The following lines are also required for the serial console,

serial0.present = "TRUE"

serial0.fileType = "network"

serial0.fileName = "telnet://127.0.0.1:9001"

serial0.startConnected = "TRUE"

serial0.yieldOnMsrRead = "TRUE"

8. Start the IOS XRv Virtual Machine. Fire up Terminal Application and connect.

You can then just telnet localhost 9001 to get access to the console (Thanks Harold for the tip!)

9. Sit back, Take a selfie and Enjoy!

I cannot for the life of me get this to work. I have deployed the ova into workstation and cannot successfully login. It asks me to create a root-system username so I do, and a secret, so I do, then I cannot login after that. Even when trying to use the built in accounts, Cisco, Lab, root, admin.

Nothing seems to work.

I am able to telnet to the serial and set the root user/password but afterwards when I prompted to enter username and I do so it never asks for password and gives following error

"RP/0/0/CPU0:Mar 7 18:47:18.544 : exec[65687]: %SECURITY-login-4-AUTHEN_FAILED :

Failed authentication attempt by user 'iosxr' from 'console' on 'con0_0_CPU0'"

I stumbled on this the other day when I enabled telnet.  You can use cisco/cisco as the username/passwrod.

I was having the same login problem.  I use SecureCRT, and following these two articles fixed the problem.  I assume you can apply something similar to other terminals like Putty.

Thank you for the tutorial.
It perfectly worked for me for just one XRv machine.
When i am trying to add another one and i edit vmx file in order to add console access - i alwaya get either "VMX is corrupt" or "Dicionary problem" and my VM cannot start.
Are there any workarounds for this ??

Hello,

Which version of XRv are you running? Can you please check the hash of the file you downloaded?

Also, can you please share the VM settings you have configured?

I had the same issue. The quote "" in the end of this line should be the same type as the one at the beginning:

serial0.fileName = "telnet://127.0.0.1:9001"

...9002” different

...9002" same

Thanks to Harold. Hope it helps.

You have to adjust your bios to support virtualization

for lenovo
f1 bios
config > cpu > enable virtualization

I encountered this situation also. I've resolved it.
I think this is a setting problem of termianl emulator like Putty or Secure CRT In my case.
this is my solution.
1. if you use Putty, V check here that [ Category : Connection / Telnet Return key sends Telnet New Line instead of ^M]
2. if you use Secure CRT, Select here that [ Options / Global Options / General-Default Session / Edit Default Settings.. / Termail-Emulation-Mode/ marking V to New Line mod in Intial modes.

Hi all,

i deployed a ios xrv 5.3.0 and all went fine.

I deployed a second one and changed the telnet port to 9002 and when start the VM i got a Dictionary problem error. How cai solve it? The only way up to now is strip the serial configuration but then the VM is not accesible.

This is also true if i copy the first working iosxrv and change the port. I also tried to change the number of the serial port.

thanks
