Evolved Programmable Network: Innovations with Segment Routing

The complexity of today’s networks is a major challenge for service providers looking to improve their operations and bottom line. While SDN and NFV technologies offer some relief, a clearly defined strategy for implementing them in already complex IP/MPLS networks is needed. This strategy is part of Cisco’s Evolved Programmable Network—Segment Routing, an innovation for current IP/MPLS architectures that is designed to balance the advantages of distributed intelligence, centralized optimization, and programmability. Segment routing aims to simplify the operation of MPLS (lower OpEx), enable application-based service creation (new revenue), and allow for better utilization of the installed infrastructure (lower CapEx).
