Cisco RVS4000 - QuickVPN wont connect Windows 8

lee

We are using QuickVPN to connect to our Cisco RVS400 router, however since upgrading to Windows 8 I cannot get it to connect.

I have tried enabling PPTP, L2TP and GRE both in and out but it just goes through the connection process and eventually times out Verifying Network.

We're using using PPTP, its not been a problem on other versions of Windows with Exception to Windows 7 where you get the issue that the firewall has to be enabled.

I'm using the latest QuickVPN client 1.4.2.1

The router is running firmware version 1.3.1.0

I have also tried running the client as Administrator; system also has UAC turned off and is running as an a member of the Administrator group.

And also have tried running in Compatibility mode Windows 7 without any success.

I would be very greatful for any help.

TIA

Lee.

Hi Siva,

Spot on, thanks for your help.

I will just clarify a couple points for anyone else who runs into this issue.

Here's my current configuration with it working.

In the advanced firewall neither Inbound nor Outbound rules for Routing and Remote Access (L2TP-[In/Out], PPTP-[In/Out], GRE-[In/Out]) seem to need to be enabled.

In order to run in Vista SP2 mode navigate to

The VPNClient.exe

on Windows 64bit

C:\Program Files (x86)\Cisco Small Business\QuickVPN Client\VPNClient.exe

or Windows 32bit

C:\Program Files\Cisco Small Business\QuickVPN Client\VPNClient.exe

Right click and select Troubleshoot compatibility

Select Troubleshoot program

Just check the "The program worked in earlier version of Windows but won't install or run now"

(You dont need the "The program requires additional permissons"  aka  Run as Administrator

Hit next then select Windows Vista (Service Pack 2) then next again

Hit Test the program which now should connect.

Complete the Program Compatibility Troubleshoot and save the configuration.

Thanks again Siva.

Still not working for me. I actually tried all of the various compatibility modes to no effect.

Hi Ronald,

I presume you do have the Windows firewall enabled?

Where does yours stop, is it at the "Verifying Network" ?

Lee

Yes, the Windows firewall is enabled, and yes, it stops at "Verifying Network"; please see the log below; one interesting bit is that it shows the OS as XP, although I'm running 8 Pro and selected Vista SP2 from the compatibiltiy list:

Hello Lee,

From the router GUI try enabling remote management with https(443) and disable 'block WAN request'.

Thanks and regards,

Siva

Enabling remote management with https(443) and disabling block WAN request

made no difference.

Please note that although this is posted in the RVS4000 forum, we are currently using the Quick VPN Client with many Cisco routers, including the RVS4000, WRVS4400N, RV042 and RVO82. The only difficulty occurs when connecting to any of them from Windows 8. With any other OS, including Windows Server 2008, we can connect to any of these routers using Quick VPN with no issues.

Hello Lee,

It could be an issue with windows firewall settings. You may contact us at

Thanks and regards,

Siva

FWIW, please note that turning on network discovery on the virtual adapter allowed QuickVPN to work.

What virtual adapter are you referring to?  There is no virtual adapter associated with QuickVpn that I can find.  Please clairfy.  Thanks.

I was refering to the hyper-v virtual adapter/switch refered to in this thread. Sorry for the referential ommission.

The only way the VPN Client worked is with compatibilaty mode, I used Windows 7 and then it worked no problem.  Although I enabled the firewall, turned on network discovery but it did not help once I ran in compatiblity mode it connected to my Cisco 4410N Business router.

I am trying to connect a new Windows 8 Pro laptop to the RVS4000 using the latest version of QuickVPN Client.

I have my prior Windows 7 laptop on the same home network. It conncects and functions just fine.

I tried the compatibilty modes but the conncection conntuies to time out on "Verifying Network.

I just recently orderd the RV180W to update the office hardware and to get wireless capability. I note it also uses the QuickVPN Client.

I am stunned that Cisco does not have th QuickVPN Client compatible with Windows 8 yet - you cannot buy a cinsumer laptop these days without Windows 8.

I considerd trying the Cisco Anyconnect software, but it seems overlly complex and not for the untrained.

Cisco - what is the plan or solution here - or shoudl I just return the hardware and use another vendor?

A new issue has cropped up in Windows 8: when attempting to connect in Windows 8, the certificate warning no longer displays. Log:

2013/02/14 22:42:03 [STATUS]OS Version: Windows XP

2013/02/14 22:42:03 [STATUS]Windows Firewall is ON

2013/02/14 22:42:03 [STATUS]One network interface detected with IP address xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

2013/02/14 22:42:03 [STATUS]Connecting to remote gateway with IP address: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

2013/02/14 22:42:03 [WARNING]Server's certificate doesn't exist on your local computer.

However, since the warning does not display, I cannot continue. BTW, online chat linked previously in this thread now hangs at "A Cisco Support Engineer will join as soon as available."
