RV042 cannot establish PPPoE, but PC can

Hello everybody,

I have a RV042 and want to establish one WAN connection via PPPoE. I enter Username and Password, Keep Alive, MTU=Auto. The router does not get an IP address (0.0.0.0) and the log says: "[pppoe] sending PADI", "last message repeated 5 times". What is confusing me is that a PC connected to the RV042 (and a DSL-Router operating in Modem-Mode "PPPoE Pass-Through") can establish a PPPoE connection with the same Username and Password.

Why can the PC connect via PPPoE, but the RV042 can not?

Regards, Felix

Can you try cloning the Mac address from your PC onto the WAN port of the RV042.  also try setting MTU to 1492 on the RV042 for DSL (PPPoE connections)

I tried already cloning the MAC address. Result was that after "sending PADI" I get "HOST_UNIQ successful match", then "receiving PADO", "sending PADR", but then "last message repeated xxx times", no PADS.

Just curious have you tried any other MTU size?

follow the link instructions here to work out your max MTU setting.

I solved the problem! It had nothing to do with MTU. A value of 1492 works fine.

Also I don't need MAC address cloning.

I don't have a complete understanding of why it works now, but here is what I did:

To establish a DSL line I am using a "home gateway" device called "KomplettBox" (the "Box" for short) provided by my ISP (Congstar in Germany). This is a router, WLAN AP and phone "socket" (?). To use it with the RV042 I needed to delete account information to prevent the router from logging into the DSLAM and set the Box into modem-mode (PPPoE Pass-Through).

Now for the cabeling: I connected the WAN1 of the RV042 with the LAN1 of the Box. And I connected LAN1 of the RV042 with LAN2 of the Box, because I needed access to the web configuration interface of the Box (to switch on and off modem-mode and router-mode in the troubleshooting phase).

When I removed this second cable connection and accessed the Box via WLAN, the RV042 successfully establishes a PPPoE-connection and logs into the DSLAM with the provided account information.

Thanks to everybody who spent some thoughts on my problem.

Best regards,

Felix
