RV042 Functionality Question with Dual WANs

Hi All,

I have a question about how the RV042 behaves when you specify one link to be a failover link.  I saw some behaviour last night that didn't seem right to me.

My Configuration:

- WAN1 - cable connection to one of my Internet providers

- WAN2 - PPPoE DSL connection to a second Internet provider

- Two VPN tunnels to two different sites

My goal is to have the majority of my traffic traverse WAN1 and only have specific traffic (my two VPN tunnels and some voice traffic) traverse WAN2, as well as have it there as failover in case WAN1 goes down.

What I found when I tried setting this up last night was that, when the router was configured in failover mode, my PPPoE session on WAN2 would no longer connect.  Only when I had the router set up as load balance was I able to connect to both of my Internet providers.

Is this the intended behaviour of the RV042?  Or should I be able to have both WAN connections up and running when the router is configured for failover?

I also noticed that if I tried making my WAN2/PPPoE primary in a failover situation, it still would not connect.

Thank you for reaching the Small Business Support Community.

When “Smart Link Backup” is selected, only If the primary WAN connection is unavailable, the backup WAN connection is used, so yes, that is the intended operation of the RV042 failover feature.

Something not normal is, if I understood correctly, that if you select WAN2 as the primary link, with failover to WAN1, the failover does not work, meaning the WAN1 does not pick up when WAN2 goes down?

Just in case and even though this is not a known issue, I suggest you to upgrade to the latest firmware release version 4.2.2.08;

In my experience, this is completely normal behavior.  That's why it's kind of a waste to have it set to failover as that bandwidth just sits idle.

What's more important is your site-to-site vpn connections will fail as they are bound to one wan or another.  And if the wan changes, so does the IP address and other vpn configuration parameters.

the way to configure this is to set the device to load balance (both links active).  system management --> dual wan-->  load balance

set the bandwith (system management-> bandwith management) on both connection to the actual amount your  provider is giving (this is used for the out bound load balance algorithm, QOS and other functions in the router).

to get the primary web traffic going out wan1, use the protocol binding feature to cause outbound (and the replys) to wan1.  system management --> dual wan--> protocol binding   

bind http, and https to wan 1 (along with any other protocols you want to go out that port).

If wan1 fails, the protocol binding won't forward to a port that is down, so it will fail over to the other link.

do the same with your voip or whatever other protocols you want out wan2.

set your vpn endpoints to wan2.  (or set them up for vpn failover if you are using 2 rv0xx routers for tunnel endpoints).

then test test test.
