RV180W question regarding VPN and internet

Dear all,

I'm not an IT goroe but a guy that travels a lot and has frequent internet connections with restrictions.

At the moment I'm looking into the possibility to set up a VPN connection with my home internet connection.

What I would like is to install a piece of hardware that allows me to connect to through the internet using a VPN connection.

Ideally i want the connection in the hardware to connect straight back to the internet. Regardless of other hardware connected to the switch / router.

In that way it doesn't mather where I am in the world, I can use the home IP address to surf the net.

Would the Cisco RV180W do the trick ? Or would a different model be preferred to do the job ?

I'd suggest you to go for a QuickVPN setup (remote access VPN). QuickVPN is an easy way to set up VPN software on your remote computer or laptop with a simple username and password. Below is a link with the QuickVPN application notes so you better understand how it works;

I have a similar requirement to Jurgen except mine is a small buisiness enviroment but like Jurgen I'm not an IT specilist. However I hve purchased the RV180W and done the basic setup as follows

• I have a2Wire DSL modem from AT&T that is connected to the WLAN port on the RV180W,
• The wireless is disabled on the 2wire and the addressing is set to use 10.0.0.x
• The 2wire gives the RV180W and address of 10.0.1.34
• THe LAN side of the RV180W is connected to a  24port Switch that all my printers, a NAS and users are connected to.
• The RV180W is set up to provide the wifi access and DCHP services

Setting up the system so far has been easy but now I need to set up the VPN access. THe RV180W Administrators manul gives a lot of information about what settings are available but if like me you are new to setting up of VPN's it is not much help. I need a quick set guide to quickly get the VPN working while I learn about the features is there one available that shows me an example of what to set that I can work with to set my VPN up.

Quick VPN is a remote access VPN solution if you want to simplify the VPN setup process, you do not have to configure VPN policies and it basically takes two steps;

1. You must first create Quick VPN user accounts on the RV180 router; page 121 in the admin guide;

I am not aware of  easier to follow step by step documents in how to setup a remote access QuickVPN, nor able to find either.  If you require better assistance setting that up, I suggest you to contact the Small Business Support Center;

Thank you for your time and effort taken to answer my question !

It seams straight forward to set up a VPN connection. Should be doable for me.

Could you explain in short what happens when I open the VPN connection?

I guess when the connection is established you end up at the LAN side of the router. But does it automatically mean when I open for instance a browser on the client side that the requested pages go through the VPN connection? And is the page request that enters the router through the VPN automatically routed to the internet connection to which the router is connected?

I'm using a mac computer so I have to indicate all the traffic should go through the VPN connection.

Is there a way to check / verify if the VPN connection is in deed used for the internet traffic and mail?
