RV220W - Packet Loss (wired and wireless)

Hi There

I have a RV220W with the latest firmware (1.0.2.4) and I loose about one in every 20-40 packets.

I have tried with both wireless/wired, on different ports, laptops, and Ethernet cables.

My configuration is fairly simple:

1.) I reconfigured the default subnet

2.) I setup a WAP on the same vlan (VLAN1)

3.) I setup a WAP on Vlan2 for guests

Other than that, settings are out of box (save a hostname/etc).

Any ideas? I just purchased it, and am thinking I'll have to phone Cisco for RMA.... There is a similar thread where people noticed this on wireless (not sure if they tried wired as I have).  RV220W Packet Loss over wireless

Update. I RMA'ed this device (before the 1.0.3 firmware came out).

I received a new unit, but I am having the same problem, on a wired connection:

Reply from 192.168.21.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64

Request timed out.

Strange hey? I am on the latest firmware, and default settings, other than an IP change for the router and DHCP scope.

I did setup a wireless network, with WPA2, and one SSID.

I'll be opening another Cisco ticket. This is crazy.

Under the RV220W firewall  àBasic Settingsàattacks Checks

Make sure Blocker Fragmented packets is (unchecked)

The problem has returned. I have to reboot the router every day or so.

My config is basic. No Vlan's default settings (other than the one suggested by Jasbryan).

I'll have to open a call again.

Try upgrading the firmware to 1.0.3.5, then do a factory reset and try again

Never solved it.. It's better with the suggestion that Jasbryan gave, but it still drops pings. I find that it gets worse, and then a reboot clears it up.

At the moment, I'm booting every 2 days or so, hoping for some magical firmware to come fix it. I can't say I'm impressed.

I have done factory resets a few times, and this is my second RV220W with the same issue.

Hi Henry,

Thanks for the response. I have the same issues, reinstalled previous firmwares did various factory resets but cannot get this box to remain stable. Last night it died only to come up after a hard reboot this morning.

After configuring the RV220W to log externally i found the following errors:

Realy guys, are you serious about your quality control in relation to this product? I have one advice, please open up the box to allow alternative software (HyperWRT/Tomato/etc), it'll seriously improve your product (if not, it will speed up the release of new firmware with fixes)

For now i'm done with it, i have spent way too much time on it. I'm going to replace it with a competitive brand (and write this one off after a useless lifetime of 3 months as i cannot return this one) and will think twice before buying any Cisco Small Business products again. For all others who are thinking to buy this box, stay away from it!!!!

Yeah if you would like to try the beta firmware , you'll need to give Cisco Small Business Support Center a call (1-866-606-1866)and request beta firmware. We will need to create a case and escalate your case up. They will get you to sign a beta agreement and send you a link for download that beta firmware for testing.

Jasbryan, I will do that.  As added information, going on comemnts from Marcel, I went and setup a syslog.

When I get "Request timed out" I get a:

Feb 24 10:46:03 rv220w KERNEL [Kernel] ERROR:endChantRecv: protocol PNAC returned !OK

This is consistant for me. When there is a timeout, there is the above log. They seem to come and go for me.  A reboot of the router fixes it, but it happens often...

Hi Henry,

Ive seen this one as well. I also noticed that if an unstable / bad perfoming DNS server is used, the problems increase. You might want to check the performance of your DNS configuration.

Any duplicate entries have been removed.

My 2 cents, the problem is definitely software related, because when the device performs, it performs ok. Unfortunately, its not stable, too much errors exist so either the development kit does not provide sufficient access or the knowledge is not present. I've already ordered a new router (non-Cisco) but will periodically test new firmware to see if the problem is solved in the future.

Good luck with the Beta firmware, let us know the outcome!

Was finally able to reproduce for Cisco support.

I did have some overall internet ping speed improvements just by turning off auto negotiate on the WAN side. That said, it's still dropping pings, even to the router interface with the error I mentioned above.

My logs/config/etc are being analyzed by Cisco, and on to Level 2 support. I'll update this list when I find out more.

One thing  I am happy about is the quality of Cisco support here so far. Thanks Jason M for you webex/troubleshooting on this one. Hopefully its something that can be tweaked and resolved.

We shall see.
