WRV210 Self reboots

j.greenwell

I've began having problems with the WRV210 where the router just reboots.  Sometimes it may go for an hour or more then it slips into a series of reboots.  The up time varies so I see no pattern.  Contacted support they thought the device may have been defective so we did a RMA.  Well guess what?  The replacement arrived on Friday we put it in place and the same thing is happening.  We are not using any of the VPN or VL options.  Just simple PAT to a few internal machines for RDP access and an internal exchange server.  The Qos is all disabled.  It has the newest firmware which I have reflashed.  I'm at a loss to explain the behavior but it doesn't appear to be isolated to a defective device.  Any ideas would be helpful.

Joe,

Just a few questions

Have you looked to see if you are getting any power surges (AKA) power spikes or brown outs? Is the UPS you are using causing the same problems to other devices?

If the router is unplugged from the network, does it do the same thing, and what devices are hanging off the router that could cause the problem.

Just a few quick thoughts

Joe,

I would try moving where the WRV210 is plugged in to a different circuit, if you don't have a UPS. I would recommend having this unit put on a UPS since you are having instable power surges. If this is a power issue this will certainly fix your issue. Also you might want to look at all the Ethernet cables that are plugged into WRV210 to verify there are no breaks or Kinks.

Thanks,

Here is what I've currently done.  The device was already on a APC UPS.  I've put the previous router in place so that it is working as the gateway.  I've assigned a free IP address to the WRV210 internal interface and connected it to the other gateway.  There is nothing plugged into the WAN port on the WRV210.  That way I can monitor the device and see if it continues the behavior with only a connection on the lan side of the device.

When it was in production there were only two devices connected.  On the WAN side was a SMC cable modem from comcast.  On the lan side was a 24 port netgear router.  When I checked this morning it had been up for 18 hours but that is not unusual.  I will be interested to see what happens the rest of the week.  I can not imagine why the device is doing rebooting.  If it does it again I'm going to switch it to a different ups to verify that is not an issue.

The currently router is a netgear with the same settings as the WRV210 and it has no problems.

     Joe,

Any updates on the WRV210 Rebooting ?

Thanks,

My WRV210 does the same thing.

I've been trying to figure out why randomly reboots.    Sometimes its hourly, sometimes several hours apart.

But when I check this page:  http://192.168.1.1/StatusRouterDHCP.asp  the System Uptime is never very long.

Or when I'm having an outage or problem, I'll immediately check the status and it says:  System Up time: 30-40 seconds.

So it was clearly a router issue.

Funny thing is I never had this problem when I was on the Linksys 1.x (black & blue) firmware.

Its only been since I "upgrade" to the new Cisco 2.x firmware.

Now I'm trying to find an old firmware to change to.

Chris,

When you upgraded to latest firmware, did you factory reset and reconfigure manually?

Some times new code over old code causes problems if a reset wasn't done.

Thanks

.:|:.:|:.

I will attempt that later when I have access to the router.

Thanks

I updated from 2.0.0.11 to 2.0.1.5  yesterday afternoon and did a factory reset, and I'm still having random "reboots".

I assume it is a reboot / restart of some sort as the router goes non-responsive (no internet connections / can not be reach via HTTP interface either) for less than a minute, and the uptime counter resets.

Also, the other problem which I've had with this router is I can not use the QuickVPN client with Windows7 64-bit, it works fine on my older WinXP pc's.

I have an RSV4000 at work and the WRV210 at home, which I sometimes enable the IPsec VPN on, lately I've left it disabled as I thought that was the cause of this connection problem.   However, I realize now the problems were when I "upgraded" from the old Linksys firmwares to the Cisco firmware.

Chris,

Can you try capturing some logs , if i am correct you have to send the logs to a syslog server. This should tell us what happens on the system or around the time the router locking up. Please make a note of the time when the router locks up so we can attempt to reference in the logs. I know qvpn didn't use to work with 64 bit O.S but now only a few customers are having problems. Generally its a problem with PC since Qvpn is just an application that allows you to easily configured the IPsec client that's install in windows to connect to our router. This is why it's free ! If you would like hands on support you can give us a call @ 1866-606-1866 but please have system logs captures before calling in .

You should be able to use any syslog server application, there generally free on the WEB. I like TFTPD32 program because it's can be use as TFTP,SNTP,syslog,DHCP,DNS. NOTE: If you use this program please make sure you disable the DHCP option that comes enabled by default. This can cause problems on the network.

Thanks,

Well, I've been trying to capture what is causing the router to lock up.   Currently it is happening less since I've updated to 2.0.1.5.  However, the router is still locking up at least once a day.   Unfortunately it always seems to happen when my PC is in power save mode, thus Tftpd32.exe doesn't catch the incident.

Just now, the router was working however the wifi was not, I had to manually unplug the router to get it back working, as trying to enable/disable it via the web interface didn't seem to help.

I do see that I'm having a lot of DoS attacks.   Do you think that could be causing the problem(s) ?

Router just locked up / restarted 4 minutes ago, noticed it went down.

Here's the status so you can figure out what time it restarted:

Hardware Version:WRV210-A V01
Software Version:2.0.1.5
Current Time:2011/08/09 Tue 04:18:36 (GMT -06:00)
System Up Time:4m:57s

And here's the syslog:

Hi,

Looking at the logs and seen where the router detected a IP spoofing attach and smurf attack and then rebooted. Not sure if this is what causing the router to reboot sure does point in that direction. The smurf attach can cause a broadcast storm and actually freeze your router and cause a reboot.

Do you have a static ip address on your router?

Run a anti-virus and spy ware programs on all your computers in your network to rule out possible infection

After this is completed and more logs capture and router still rebooting please give us a call @ 1-866-606-1866 open a support case. After all this testing router still having an issue it could be a hardware issue which we would have to RMA unit.

Thanks,
