To customise the phone GUI and menus, it is necessary to make modifications to the XML configuration file as described below.  When a given parameter is set to be read-only or not available, then that parameter will be read-only or removed entirely from the web GUI when logged on at user level.  If the parameter has a corresponding option in the menus accessed through the phone keypad and screen, then that option will also be made read-only or removed as appropriate.

Note: A user logged on to the web GUI as admin will continue to be able to access the specified parameters, so it is important that any phones configured with this type of restriction also have an admin password set.

To restrict access to a given parameter, make the following changes to the phones XML configuration:

  1. Set the <Phone-UI-user-mode> parameter to Yes.
  2. Add an attribute to any parameters for which you want to restrict access.  The attribute in question is the 'ua' (user access) attribute, and it can take a value of 'rw', 'ro', or 'na' (read-write, read-only, and no-access respectively). For example, to restrict access to the DND menu option would require the following XML: <DND_Setting ua="na">No</DND_Setting>
  3. Ensure the phone has an admin password configured that is not known to the end user.

If the ua attribute is not specified for a parameter, then that parameter will be made visible or otherwise in the web GUI and phone UI based on the system default setting for that parameter.  Support for controlling the web GUI in this way is a long standing feature of the SPA series of products.  The support for the visibility of phone UI parameters to reflect that of the corresponding parameter in the web GUI was introduced in firmware version 7.4.8.  More information about this facility may be found in the SPA500 Administration Guide under the heading Restricting User Access to the Phone Interface Menus, and the Cisco IP Telephony Provisioning Guide under the heading Open Format Configuration File.
