How to configure your SX300 switch to work in layer 3 mode using the 1.2.7.76 code

1.) Connect to the console of the switch using a program such as hyperterminal or putty

Additionally, if you do not have a console port available, you may log  in to the switch's User Interface and navigate to the TCP/UDP services  and enable the Telnet service then use a program such as putty or  hyperterminal to access the CLI over ethernet.

2.) Once logged in, type the command "menu"

3.) Navigate to the system mode using the down arrows on the keyboard then hit the 'Enter' key on the keyboard

**From the CLI you may use the command "set system mode router" then use the "reload" command to reboot.

4.) Use the right arrow key to select edit, then hit 'Enter' on the keyboard. The System mode will be selected, hit 'Space Bar' to toggle between layer 2 and layer 3. After choosing layer 3, hit 'Escape' on the keyboard to be able to use the save function by pressing the right arrow on the keyboard. After clicking save, use the left arrow twice to quit.

5.) Navigate to the system configuration menu then hit 'Enter'

6.) Navigate to reboot system and hit 'Enter' on the keyboard

7.) After the reboot is completed, the switch will be factory default settings. This also means, your VLAN 1 IP by default is toggled to receive a DHCP address. In best practice, set your VLAN 1 to a static IP address before configuring anything else.

**If you create a second VLAN, then add an IP address to the second VLAN's IP interface BEFORE configuring your VLAN 1 with a static IP address, the VLAN interface with a static IP will become the management VLAN. From the GUI this creates problems as you likely won't have a port configured in VLAN 2 to re-access the switch.

8.) Next, you may create your additional VLANs desired and assign an IP address desired that is not the same as the VLAN 1 subnet

9.)  Verify the results, first configure a port to include the VLAN's that were created. On this example I am using gi1

10.) Connect a device in to the port configure, in my example gi1, notice both vlan interfaces will come up

11.) Verify the IP interfaces

12.) Lastly, verify the IP routes dynamically built within the switches route table
