Broken Reset Button on SG 300 Switch - Need to reset

I can't seem to reset my switch and realized the reset button is missing/broken off.  Is there an alternate method to reset the switch to factory settings?  If not, how do I figure out the IP of the web interface, it is not the default.

Hi Mark,

You can try a free tool such as Angry IP Scanner to scan the subnet and locate all devices or install the FindIT toolbar in your browser which will locate the switch.

I was able to find it via the FindIT utility.  The ip address is 192.168.2.254.  However, I am still not able to browse the web interface.  Since my router IP range is 192.168.1.1-254, I am guessing that is the issue?  If so, do you have any recommendations?  I simply want to add a switch to my router so I can have more ports.

Is the web interface simply not loading or do you not have the password? Your DHCP range does not matter unless there is another device on the network that is currently assigned 192.168.1.254. If that is the case you will have trouble accessing the web UI. It is usually easiest to plug ONLY a PC and the switch together and assign a static IP to the PC:

IP Address: 192.168.1.200

Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

Default Gateway: None

DNS Servers: None

This will allow you to access the switch without interference from other network devices. Remember to change the PC back to DHCP when you are done. If you do in fact have an IP conflict you should also change the switch to a different static IP.

You can also access the switch using a console cable. You can check the settings and see if the web interface has been disabled or you can reset the password in case you lost it. Check the Admin Guide for details:

Hi Marty,

Thanks for your responsive replies!

I was finally able to access the web page by changing my computer ip to 192.168.2.150, note the "2".  Since my switch is at 192.168.2.254, i figured I needed to also be 192.168.2.....

Now, I can't log into the darn thing, seems I can't remember my username and password.  Darn. 

So, back to square one, I need to reset this to factory the settings, but the darn button is broken.  If I connected with a console cable, would that bypass the login info?

Hi Mark, reference this document down to step 4. You will see a password recovery procedure. Basically, once the switch loads, the password is blank, you just hit enter to get in to the enable mode.

Hi Thomas,

I am not using Windows XP (I'm using windows 7) so I do not have HyperTerminal.  If I did, would that mean I need to have a cable that connects to the console port on the back of the switch?  or can I connect my PC to the switch via ethernet? 

I can download a win 7 version of something similar to hyperterminal, but want to make sure I understand everything so I can go buy a console cable.  Uggh.

You can download putty or hyper terminal. HT was removed on Vista and Window 7, but the files can be downloaded and places anywhere on either OS.

I also recommend to buy a serial to usb adapter, prolofic makes a nice one for about $15.
