CISCO SG500 password reset

CarolChiz

Trying to reset the admin password for a SG500 switch.

I have console access.

It looks a lot like this:

https://supportforums.cisco.com/discussion/11523086/sg200-26-password-reset

However when I press 3 to chose the password recovery procedure and enter I end up at a prompt

switch962d03>

What do I do next?

Next question

I am testing this on a  single switch, because the real lost password is on a stack of four switches. Once i have found out how to do the single one, how does it work on a stack?

Hi Carol,

First of all switch needs to be master to have full access so when removed from stack please double check led status indication of the unit ID.

Please note that password recovery option allows you to bypass password for the current session, simply anything you enter will be accepted.

If you happen to be in so called "Exec mode" switch962d03> you have to run:

switch962d03> enable

switch962d03#config

switch962d03(config)#username cisco password [new password]

switch962d03(config)#exit

switch962d03#wr

And you shouldbhave your new password saved.

Thanks this works perfectly on the standalone switch.

On the stack:

When you say remove from stack, do you mean unplug the linking cables?

Do I power it all down first?

When do I put them back?

Will the master then "fix" all the slaves and recreate the stack?

Many thanks

Carol

For any other newbies like me:

look at LED to see which is master

Connect the the master on console

Serial cable, hyperterminal, 115000 baud, 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit, no flow control

power down all the stack except the master

power cycle the master

during boot watch the hyperterminal console and when you see "autoboot in 2 seconds - press return or ESC to enter prom PRESS ESC

choose 3 in the menu

switch will boot, and you will eventually come to a prompt as in my first question.

This must happen quite often it would be nice if there were a procedure

Hi Carol,

removing from stack means really doing some steps that any switch is master. So for units which are not master it is good practice to disconnect the stack cables and reboot. LED indicating unit ID should show master so that you can access the configuration. Please note that if you intend to keep all units in stack password recovery can be done on master only and this should be sufficient.

I hope it make sense :-)

Regards,

Aleksandra
