Path between 2 end users

Hello,

switch-traffic.png

How can we track the traffic between PC1 and PC3 (send and receive) through CLI, so we get the list of switches where the traffic passed through.

Note: The used switches are cisco SF302 and SG300.

Thanks in advance.

Hi there,

In a simple tree topology like you present in the diagram, If the PCs are in the same VLAN it should be easy to follow to the that a traffic stream between them takes. If there is routing involved, ie the a connected to different VLANs, then there path may not be quite a simple, but we would need to see more of the topology.

Regarding monitoring the traffic, I don't believe those switches support netflow, but they do support port mirroring, so you could mirror the traffic on the uplinks between the switches and capture the traffic in tcpdump/ wireshark. This would allow you to confirm that a traffic stream was using that link.

cheers,

Seb.

Hi,

Traceroute won't work since the hops shown by traceroute show the path that an IP packet follows on a routed (layer 3) network. Routers will show up, and switches will not. That's why packet capturing will do the work for you.

You can configure port mirroring, capture and analyze the traffic with Wireshark for example. Port mirroring is described in the product Administration Guide on page 89 "Configuring Port and VLAN Mirroring": https://www.cisco.com/c/dam/en/us/td/docs/switches/lan/csbms/sf30x_sg30x/administration_guide/78-19308-01.pdf
