SG300-20-20 : ARP table not automatically updated

Hi,

I'm running on the firmware 1.3.5.58 on my cisco sg300-20-20 when connecting devices arp table is not dynamically updated.

The ports is put into forwarding but the macs of my devices do not get updated.

I have this for my printer, synology, dlink wireless access point.

After some reboots, write to memory commands the ARP table gets updated.

When I'm checking the interfaces I do get a lot of internal mac receive errors.

Any idea ? When I choose a non managed switch I do not encounter any issues.

Hi Jeroen, this is the 3rd time I've heard of this. I personally cannot recreate this symptom.

I have read this one but no clear solution came except replacing the switch.

When I do use the write command it fixes my issue but it can not be that each time a lose connectivity I need to connect to the switch and execute this command.

Can you please provide the information ask on my previous post?

Can you also provide other information such as-

Does it affect EVERYTHING you try to connect?

What happens if you set speed/duplex on the port?

What happens if you shut down and restart the port?

What happens if you disable spanning tree on the port?

What happens if you disable energy efficient ethernet on the port?

Tom,

Yes every device that connects through that access point. But none of those devices remains active forever :

iphones, ipads, laptop (shutdown) , airplay device

The other access point has the internet uplink and is default gateway for the switch so there is always traffic to that one.

When  however the connection remains active , for example a wireless  connection from a laptop that is connected then the connection remains  active.

I'll try first the engergy settings of the port and will see if that makes any difference.

Hi Jeroen, look at your information and how I read things, it seems when there is no traffic, your link goes down all together.

This is consistent to the energy efficient ethernet as it makes the port go to sleep after some time to converse power.

If this assessment is true then removing this feature should resolve your problem.

Tom,

Disabling the energy on each port solved the issue when new members are added that they became immediately active. Also non active ports were still usable after some time.

But only after a reboot I had again to initatie a write before everything became active

Jeroen, thanks for this update.

Okay, so delayed ARP can be a couple anomalies.

Could be port negotiation, spanning tree or something like this.

So, while the switch does not have your arp entry can you try the following test

- shut and no shut the port to see if mac recovers

- unplug then replug in the connection

- set speed to 100 full duplex with no negotiation

- disable spanning-tree on the port then disconnect / reconnect the port

If anyone of the steps work, please wr the config to memory, reboot the switch then see what happens

This morning I had again the same issue. Now I've enabled ntp on the Access point so I don't have that issue any more. But if I for example shutdown my printer and start it again after then I have the same issue. The port becomes in forwarding , link is up but arp table is not updated.

The write command updates the arp table and printing starts.

I've tried the shut down/power up of the port : no luck , arp table not updated

Hi Jeroen, the only evidence I've found as a possible solution is to factory reset the switch then configure without a configuration file.

Is that something you may try?

Tom,

I've been testing several possibilities and found something that works for me.

The following worked for me :

     - Disabled on all ports and globally green ethernet

     - Disabled on all ports STP

Now it works like a charm. Every device is immediately recognized , mac table updated, receives IP and starts communicating.

Now I can continue to test the LAG and uplink with another switch , I shall see what that gives from additonal problems.
