SG300-28 vs SG500x Series Layer 3 for newbie

Hi all,

I want to using the lower price to learning Layer 3 Router/Switch with VLANs

I have a SonicWALL NSa 2400 connect to the ISP Router (It Port X3 as VLAN 1, 21, 31 etc)

Since NSA 2400 Router performance very poor, it is why I am thinking Layer 3 Giga Switch for the high speed network on the VLAN between VLAN etc...

I look on Cisco, see the SG300 and SG500/500x series support Layer 3, their different is 500x support dyn routing ...

I am new on router, but have some basic know what is it.. Just wonder on a small business, VLAN not over 10 to 20 IDs, what will the different on Static and Dyn routing on this case? Do their VLAN to VLAN still work or it only work good at Dyn routing?

Do I need pay the expend money on the dyn router series like SG500x?

Sorry ask to many basic questions.

Thank you of your time and help.

Dear Jimmy,

Thank you for reaching Small Business Support Community.

InterVLAN routing is supported by both the layer 3 capable SG300 and SG500 switches, please check on the below document for instructions in how to set that up on both;

I hope that answers your question and please let me know if there is any further assistance I may help you with.

Hello Jimmy,

Thank you for rating my comment!

I have found a previous post from someone asking a similar question and the problem was solved by changing the VLAN interface setting from "General" to "Access";

https://supportforums.cisco.com/message/3366644#3366644

Just in case please refer to the SG300 admin guide, chapter 12, for VLAN management details;

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/lan/csbms/sf30x_sg30x/administration_guide/78-19308-01.pdf

Please let me know if that answers your question and/or if there is anything else I may assist you with.

Thanks again,

Dear Jeffrey,

Thank you very much of the detail infom and URL with Picture how to setting the InterVLAN...

But one more questions on above case .... this KB look like not demo example how to control the security...

For example on VLAN1 have Computer 1, 2, 3

on VLAN2 have Computer 4, 5, 6

How to control VLAN 1 Only 1, 3 can access VLAN2 all computer share or like that, VLAN 1 only 1, 3 can access VLAN 2 Computer 5, 6 etc setting.

Real sorry ask too many questions like that, I had downloaded the SG300-28 User General read, it is too bad on write, all text no picture and no detail example how to setting right.

Thank you of your time and help.
