SG300-28P (10/100/1000) Port type enforcement to 100 ?

Dear Ones,

I have been running around this issue since around 3 weeks now, i have the following setup :

  • 3 Cisco Switches - SG300-28P
  • 5 IP Camera - 3S vision N6073

What i was trying to do is to run those IP Cameras using POE through the above switch model, but for some reason it does not work !!!

I have tried everything, including contacting Cisco support but i did not get a propoer solution for this problem, what i am sure about is that both switch & camera works perfectly.

I tried connecting Cisco WAP 321 to the switch and it works, i tried connecting that Camera to 10/100 switch and it does work !!!

Now, i think its an interface issue so i was trying to enforce specific ports to read 100 speed and i have seen a lot of threads talking about the DC current is different when it comes to 100 & 1000 speeds.

I have also noticed that the switch comes with port type set to 1000 Speed as default and its unchangable.

My question is , how shall i enforce the switch to run the prot type as 100 speed? is it even possible? i need a solution for this so PLEASE, if you could help let me know your opnion and how this should be resolved.

P.S. The camera network interface is supporting 10/100 speeds only and the switch does support 10/100/1000, how can i enforce the Camera to work with the SG300-28P Model?

Kindly let me know..

Thanks in advance...

Hi Ayman, to set the port speed you may do the following-

Port Management -> Port setting

Select the radio button for the port you wish to change and click edit at the bottom

There should be something to the effect adminstrative negotation, choose 100M.

Hi Tom,

Thank you for your response, I did that many times and still the same results.

I tried both 10 / 100 speeds and non of them work.

it still for some reason show port type as 1000 speed , Do you think that the power pins are different when it comes to 100 & 1000 speeds?

This issue is driving me crazy, the Camera does work perfectly with other switches, i tried:

Netgear, Link Sys, HP ( all of them are 100m speed ) , when i try this 10/100/1000 switch " cisco " it does not work

Ayman, can you affirm it looks like this?

Yes, confirmed. Exactly like the screen shot above...

Ayman, not sure what to tell you. My port speeds negotiate as I tell it to and work as they are configured.

What software version does your switch use?

Hi Tom,

Firmware i am running is Sx300_FW_1.3.0.62.ros

Also refer to below link which contains the PDF file for the PIN configuration for the POE modules in the Camera. It shows the power pins in the RJ45 as Numbers 4,5 for +ve and 7,8 for -ve.

Ayman, out of curiosity, can you set the port speed to 10 half duplex?

Hi Tom,

Tried that and still same results, the camera refuses to run.

This is very strange, really...

I was thinking of buying another switch, but the issue is i am not sure any more if it would work or not

This is a waste of time / money really. I even had a discussion with Cisco tech. support and they said " as long as the Switch is working fine with other devices , we cannot help, it seems that its a Camera issue " , well i would say the Camera works in all switches except this one and i am not sure why...

Ayman, this is kind of an old conversation, in the context there are a couple other products which behave similiarly. But the difference being, the POE is recognized and works but has some functionality issues.

However, I also notice on this camera there is an 802.3af POE option, this is not a standard feature for the camera.

Are you 100% sure you have purchased the camera with the POE option?

At the very minimum if the camera is POE capable, you would see the switch attempting to negotiate the POE even if it fails.

Hi Tom,

Yes i am pretty sure, i have called 3S vision and confirmed it, also i conducted 3 test in 3 different switches last week and the camera worked just like that " Plug & Play ".

I have tested out 3 switches and they are :

  • Cisco Switch 16 Port 10/100
  • Netgear 8 port 10/100
  • Cisco Switch 8 Port 10/100

I was able to view the camera and modify the settings, upgrade the firmware, etc. all worked, except this model !!!!

I am losing hope on this and we are considering buying another switch which would be a waste of money.

Is there is any possible way to enforce the port to read it?

Also i have noticed one thing, whenver i plug the Camera to SG300-28P switch, the camera has a small led in the motherboard which keeps blinking red when its connected. It is like its trying to boot but not able too.

I have until the end of the week, if this issue is not sorted out with this switch model, i will have to buy another one

Find below the power consumption screenshot of the Camera when its connected to GE1 port which is causing the camera to blink red which is like trying to boot up.

Hi Ayman, can you provide the poe statistics for the port? Such as if it has invalid signature, etc?

Also, if you like, we can try to do a team viewer session at some point if you'd like me to take a look at it.
