WAP121 extremely slow

A client contacted me for assistance with their wireless network. They had just purchased three WAP121 wireless access points and upon setting them up discovered the devices provided extremely slow access to the Internet. They have cable Internet service from Comcast and when attached to Ethernet or an older wireless router, speedtest.net shows download speed of 30Mbps. But when connected to any one of the three WAP121 devices they get less than 1 Mbps down.

Upon reviewing the settings with Cisco tier 1 support nothing seems amiss. The issue persists even when the AP is transported to another site. I am awaiting contact from tier 2.

Anyone else seeing this kind of behavior?

This information is for future visitors.

I never bought the WAP121; i bought the WAP321.  I had the same exact issues as described here.  I read all 12 pages, and took lots of the other requests and fixes.  I contacted Cisco, and have a case open.

Long story short i resolved it.  I got these 2 weeks prior; but didnt have the time to troubleshoot.  I happen to troubleshoot, and look again for an update and one was released 8/6.  I updated, and still wasnt working on default settings.

I unchecked the Legacy rate checks on 1&2; and my speeds jumped up over 3mb down, 6up.  Channel 5, which was a channel not being used in my area. Changed the BEacon to 50, from the default.  I tried ALL these settings in the FW update before; with no luck.  New firmware, and it works.  OH by the way this was all done in b/g/n.  I tried both in b/g and b/g/n with previous firmware, to no avail.

I am still in process to increasing the speeds.  I have a Meraki AP, getting 7+Down.

I don't know if anyone has experienced this as well, but even with the WAP121 set to b/g mode, my downloads are limited to 10 Mbps, with no apparent limit on the uploads.

If I enable b/g/n or wireless-N on the AP, download speed are restricted even further to around 1 Mbps.

Anyone else experiencing this?

Comcast Business Class (27Mbps/7Mbps) ---Motorola SB6120 ---- Cisco RV042G --- Cisco WAP121

When I swap out the Cisco WAP121 with an Airport Extreme, the download speeds are hitting the max provider rates, and then some.

YES! After reviewing this forum, and testing on my own. Update Firmware, and Turn off 'N' - Just broadcast 802.11b/g networks. I have Comcast with two WAP121, and had SAME issues. This fixed it instantly.

Don't know why, and don't care at this point.

Hello,

I have the same problem with 5x WAP 321. Case is open with CISCO Support but no answer untill Monday.

Max bandwith for only one host near the AP in b/g/n mode : 22Mbit/s

Max bandwith for two hosts near the AP in b/g/n mode : 5Mbit/s

Max bandwith for three to five hosts near the AP in b/g/n mode : less than 3 Mbit/s

I don't understand why AP are not giving more bandwith.

Tests : upgrade fw, factory reset, changing all radio settings, same problem without sécurity.

I think these AP are low quality and i plan to by Ruckus AP if i don't find a fix to this issu.

Hello,

sorry for my english...

the same problems here with the wap121. 3x units

I received them to day as a replacement for the wap4410n.

almost no download speed but good upload speed.

download 2mbps upload 60mbps.

My wired network has150mbps up and down with fiber.

ciso support tried to configure the device to day but....

After one our only to Mac Book Pro had a good down and upload speed.

channel 6

only N

with WMM off.

MAc book pro. Fast down and upload

Sony vaio slow download fast upload

iPad 2 slow download fast upload

dell XPS 12 and 13 no connection possible at all. latest intel drivers

after enabing WMM a reboot is always needed.

WMM enabled.

Macbook slow down and fast up

Vaio faster but not fast 6 mbps down and   20mbps

Dell faster but not fast 10mbps down and +- 20mbps up

VLAN!!!

when i created a second network with Vlan id 2 (for guest)

al devices ar fast. down and up around 60mbps

ipad, sony dell and the mac.

VLAN id 2 cannot connect to vlan1 *security. So this is not a sulution for me.

Only our guests have fast internet

No I put it to G network. every device has the same up and down * +- 15mbps But my old  Linksy WRT54G is faster then the WAP121 on G. 20mbps up and down.

A shame the old one does not support VLAN's.

I need a working solution.

some one???

kind regards,

Martijn

update!

today i tested the device at work.

no problems at all.

i used our lan.

then i connected a old linksys wrt54g router on a wan port.

I connected the wap121 to a lan port from this inksys.

no problems al all.

at home i connected the wap121 to my isp fiber router (genexis) problem was back.

i disconected al other devices and factory reset the ISP router.

problem still there.

looks like a compatability issue with the router from genexis,

PlatformHRG1000
Product NameHRG1054
i will tets the devices on an other location this weekend.
see what happens.

Im having the same issues im unbale to get a speed above 2Mbps is their a way to RMA these products

It's the ISP try to change the MTU on your Router / Modum

Any idea what too currently my MTU is set to 1500 which i belive is max unless you router supports jumbo frames which this does not.

My set up Sky Netgear Router ---> Cisco SG200-26 --> Wap121

Try to ping your profider with -f -l and se when the package is beeing fragmented. start with 1472 and race with 10 to se wat happens.

At my location MTU above 1472 it fragments the packets.

I played around last night with TCP optimiser as my connection was PPPOA i too had settle on 1472 as the max MTU this may about 0.5Mb differance so now getting around 3Mbps well short of the 20Mbps i was expecting

Managed to do some more testeing last night tested.

First test (Speed test of Hard Wired connection though Switch)

Router ------ Switch ------- PC (Hard Wired)  37 Mbps

This is the Maximum for the Broadband Line

Second Test (Access Point connected to Switch)

Router ------ Switch ------- AP (WAP121)  ------- PC (Wireless)  3Mbps

Third Test (wireless built in to router same channel as access point (switched Off))

Router  ------- PC (Wireless)  14Mbps

Assume Maximum thertical wireless speed for surrounding connditions

Forth Test (Access point directly connected to router)

Router ------ AP (WAP121)  ------- PC (Wireless) 14Mbps

Access point matches thoughput of built in wireless on the same channel

Result

It seems that the problem comes between the Switch and access point bare in mind same cable was used though out dismaying cable problems.

Has anyone got any idea why connecting though the switch would have such a decrimenet reduction of speed?

Router ------ Switch ---(Problem Connection)---- AP (WAP121)  ------- PC (Wireless)  3Mbps

at my location i connected the wap121 directly to my genexis router. Still the same problem.

What kind of switch is it?
