WAP581 -> Monitor -> Clients

What is the mechanism that is utilized to obtain the client device name and IP Address?  Sometimes it shows a client device name, but most of the time it does not.  Have yet to ever see anything in the "IP Address" column.

Thanks!

Hi,

What is the firmware version you are using? Please use the latest firmware once and check.

Please check the attached file, normally the ‘Clients Details’ and ‘IP Address’ are used to show like that.

What is the ‘Total Number of Associated Clients” value shows that time?

Firmware is 1.0.1.5 (also tried 1.0.2.0 - which is what came installed on the WAP, but is curiously missing from Cisco's downloads).  Currently seven (7) associated clients.  5 that transmit a hostname as part of their DHCP discover and 2 that do not.  Two of the five clients that transmit a hostname during DORA - are showing an IP Address of "0.0.0.0" while all other clients show a "-" in the IP Address column.  All clients are working correctly from an IP/network perspective.

Thanks!

Please follow below link for detailed information regarding monitoring feature of WAP 581.

Click on Monitor option from Book contents in left of webpage - https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/access_point/csbap/wap581/Admin/b_WAP581_Admin_Guide_New/b_WAP581_Admin_Guide_chapter_0111.html

Right, that explains what the feature (roughly) is supposed to do.  it doesn't help to explain why certain artifacts aren't being presented in the GUI.  eg: is there something that the WAP is relying upon (external to WAP) in order to present those details?

The issue is that it regularly does not reveal the device name - notion here is that it's sniffing the hostname from the DHCP Discover or Response packet? (not consistently picked up, even for client's that transmit the value).  One might think that if a client doesn't transmit a hostname value (in the DHCP discover packet) that the DNS entry (PTR record if available - shortname value at minimum) would be used to provide information.

Additionally, the IP Address remains as "0.0.0.0" or "-" and never reveals the client's IP address - notion here is that it should be picking up the MAC <-> IP Address association from it's arp table as a periodic process, no?

Thanks!
