I am new to MDS 9148 Switch & want to add a Server and want to share the EMC SAN, let me know if the specified commands looks good.

///Define Fcalias Name

fcalias name GICMSG02 vsan 101---------------------------------(Thats My Server)

member pwwn 50:01:43:80:12:0c:bd:5c

fcalias name BR_VNX_SPB0 vsan 101

member pwwn 50:06:01:68:3e:e0:0f:e6

fcalias name BR_VNX_SPA0 vsan 101

member pwwn 50:06:01:60:3e:e0:0f:e6

/////Create a Zone

zone name BR_VNX_SPB_GICMGT02 vsan 101

    member fcalias GICMSG02

    member fcalias BR_VNX_SPB0

zone name BR_VNX_SPA_GICMGT02 vsan 101

    member fcalias GICMSG02

    member fcalias BR_VNX_SPA0

///Map Thats Zone to the VSAN

//zoneset name Production_Switch1 vsan 101

  //  member CX3221_A1_GICESX09_HBA1   Already in there & I will add the below commands

Hi,

I'm adding a server too and I've been to exposed to MDS/fibre/storage just for a week, did some reading and I do understand alot of it.

I have one MDS swtich connected to UCS and EMC, we added two new servers in UCS I need to do zoning for those two servers. I have the idea of all commands, just as the ones above, i'm doing device alias instead of fcalias.

From my reading I know you have to activate the zoneset.

So.

Create zone

Add memebers

go to already created zoneset

add the zone created above

Activate zoneset

Will it dusrupt anything? I am running basic mode but there are no other switches connected to it.. just the UCS and EMC so there are no E ports all of them are N ports.

Thanks

Hello mate,

The zoning activate process is not disruptive to already active zone, unless if your modifications are not only incremental changes.

Thanks for you reply Richard, not sure what you mean by  'not only incremental changes'

here's an example

zone name VMSRV012_fc0_EMC01_SPA0 vsan 250

    member pwwn 21:00:00:24:ff:48:a5:a1

    member pwwn 50:06:01:60:3e:a0:5a:c5

zoneset name MDSNAP_250_FAB-A vsan 250

    member VMSRV003_fc0_EMC01_SPA0

    member VMSRV003_fc0_EMC01_SPB1

    member VMSRV004_fc0_EMC01_SPA0

    member VMSRV004_fc0_EMC01_SPB1

    member VMSRV005_fc0_EMC01_SPA0

    member VMSRV005_fc0_EMC01_SPB1

    member VMSRV006_fc0_EMC01_SPA0

======

this is current

I'm trying to add

VMSRV012_fc0_EMC01_SPA0

to

zoneset name MDSNAP_250_FAB-A vsan 250

and then activate.

this should not delete or disrupt anything?

Thanks for your reply

This is not disruptive change.

For example, would be disruptive if you try to change the entire zone for another.

Thanks Mate,

I'm in the learning process of datacenter technologies and fiber :] coming from ethernet/routing/switching.

if you noticed your sever needs to be zoned to at least one port on SPA and one port onSPB (each HBA), this is best practice for Clariion/VNX arrays.

Yes. The FC1 is added on vsan251. I have inherited the config.
Basically everything talks to everything. Do u have a best practice doc ? Id appretiate it

i don't think it's documented anywhere but it's common knowledge for folks managing Clariion/VNX arrays.
