Hi all,
I'm a bit puzzled on some MDS 9148 expansion costs, and wanted a sanity check.
We have a couple of MDS 9148 switches. When I bought these they each had 16 licensed ports. We've used them and I need a couple more activated in each switch. My vendor told me you can activate them in groups of 8. That's fine. But what doesn't seem fine....
Brand new MDS 9148 (w/ 16 ports licensed including SFPs) : $7600 list.
MDS 9148 8 port upgrade kit (including SFPs) : $8200 list.
Something's wrong here. The vendor told me the part # is M9148PL8-8G-SFP=, this can't be right...the switch costs less than the expansion?
What's my vendor doing wrong here? What part should they be asking cisco for?
Thanks,
-Mike

Hi Mike,
I was intrigued by your post, so I did some poking around at various Cisco reseller sites.
I found similar pricing at the vaious sites (base switch being less than the 8 port expansion kit), and since
I'm not in sales it really doesn't make much sense to me either.
FWIW,
Ken

Thanks Ken.
I called and email around quite a bit on this today. Our territory manager is trying to find someone at Cisco that has the scoop on this. But so far, he's not able to find anyone with an answer. Pretty much everyone I've talked to (vendor and cisco), find this is pretty odd.
