Dear all
I know this is about cisco stuff, but, I guess there are some similarities with regards to switches whatever the make, forgive me if I sound silly.
I am replacing a netgear prosafe gs108 with exactly the same model, but hardware (PCs and laptops will be brand new, when I connect the new hardware, when I log on will I have to make sure I add the new MAC address on the hardware as I want the IP address to be fixed?
Also does the switch get the IP address from the router it is attached to? I hope this makes sense.

Hi there,
Sounds like you are talking about DHCP reservations.
If you are installing new hardware then yes, you will need to record their MAC addresses and create the static DHCP reservations within the relevant scope on the DHCP server.
Regarding the switch IP, if you have configured this as a DHCP client then it will pick up a new management IP. Again, create a DHCP reservation for this too.
However from a best practice perspective, you should be using static IPs for infrastructure hardware and not relying on DHCP for IP configuration.
cheers,
Seb.
