SG500XG-8F8T Identity Crisis

We have two SG500XG-8F8T switches that were initially setup as standalone switches. We had attempted to stack them using native stacking using ports 15 and 16 on each switch with SFP cables. They never would properly stack. However, in trying to troubleshoot this, we ran into an issue. One of the switches took on the S/N and MAC of the other switch and no matter what we do, we can't get it reset back to its own S/N and MAC as displayed on the chassis sticker.

I have unplugged all connections from the switch in questions except a serial port connection to the machine we're using to manage it and tried to factory reset it (both using the reset button held for 10+ seconds and all the way up to 30+ seconds on another attempt) which does reset the configuration. So does deleting the startup-config. However, the switch always come back displaying the S/N and MAC of the second switch.

Basically both switches right now are reporting the exact same S/N and MAC while setup in Standalone stack mode and with the one in question completely disconnected from all things on the network including the other switch and it still won't properly reset to its own S/N and MAC.

Any thoughts on how to fix this?

Hello Erik,

I am really sorry for the inconvenience you are experiencing.

This is a very rare issue, but fortunately there is a way to fix it.

Please give us a call at:
http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/web/tsd-cisco-small-business-support-center-contacts.html

so we can open up a ticket, make a WebEx session and reenter the proper SN and MAC address on the switch.

Please be advised that you will need a CLI access to the switch.

Kind regards,

Milan Milanov

Issue was resolved in a speedy fashion through the case you opened with me and we now have the system back running under it's S/N and MAC as indicated on the chassis tag.

Thank you.
