10 Gbase-T Module for Catalayst 6506

Hello, i want to know if 1port of the 16 10Gbase-t Module (WS-X6716-10T-3C) for the Catalyst 6500E Series, can be connected to a 1Gbase Port of a 2900 ISR Routers, are they gonig to work at 1Gbps or, simply, they are not compatible?

If it is true, can i create a 4ports etherchannel between them? of course using the 16 1Gbase-T switch module on the Router.

Hi,

Unfortunately the (WS-X6716-10T-3C ports are 10Gig only and cannot be used to connect to 1Gig ports.

Basically, these ports are not 10/100/1000/10000.

Thanks for your comments, so it means that you have to use another module with 1Gbase-T ports or use a 10Gbase-t capable switch instead of this routers?... it increases the costs significally.

Also, if this module was made to promote the use of 10Gbps, they should be something like 1000/10000. Today, much of the servers in the markets comes with this speed scheme. And in a future closer, maybe 2 or 3 years, this aspect will be the same for work stations and end devices... Think about it?

P.D: This situation apply for the 10Gbase-T half cards of the 4900M DC Switch?

Not supported.  That blade will only negotiate to 10 Gbps.

Cheaper front side ASIC, maybe? Single purpose instead of multi-purpose?

No.  The logic is the "cost" of the 10Gbps TX line card.

If you, as an organization, spent that amount to buy a 10 Gbps copper card, why would you want to plug a 10/100/1000BaseTX into it when you could by the 6748 card for less (a lot less).

Staged 10 gig implementation. Upgrade the core before upgrading the access layers. Been there, done that (not with a 6500 series - or evenw ith Cisco - but the concept is the same).

Get your core capable of doing 10 gig in one big bang, then stage the access layer on an "as required/justified" or budget basis peacemeal.

Q. Is 10GBASE-T compatible with Gigabit Ethernet ?

A. 10GBASE-T-capable switches can interoperate with endpoints that are  capable of negotiating either Gigabit Ethernet or 10 Gigabit Ethernet  over structured copper cabling.

I Would like to read your opinion, what does it means exactly? Can or not interoerate at 1Gbps?
