In brief, the different modules support different distances. More expensive ones support longer distances. (NB: Fiber selection impacts what modules can be used and distance too. Also for very short distances there's special copper modules. Lastly, I recall, sometimes not all switches support all modules.)
What's best to use is often what meets your distance/media requirements at the least cost.
