2 Lan problem

Hi,

i want to know if its possible have to lan on this switch... (3com 4210).... i tried have to vlan, and put them different ip... but when i try, i get...

interface vlan 2
Vlan-interface must be the same as Management-vlan.

So....

There is any chance???

You can have VLAN's on this switch because its a Layer 2 switch.

However, it can't do any Layer 3 routing so you can't create VLAN Interfaces for routing purposes.

Its an entry level switch so if you want to be able to route traffic between your VLAN's, you will need to have a L3 capable device to do this.

so, something like this is not possible

Interface vlan 20

ip address x.x.x.x x.x.x.x

assign the layer 2 ports to the vlan 

interface fe0/1

switchport access vlan 10

Hi,

If you have this setup

Router --> Switch

then you can enable router on stick config and route all your VLANs.

If you do not have a Router and only have L2 switch, then you cannot establish routing between VLANs.

It may be possible on a Layer 2 only switch to create Vlan Interfaces but not for the purpose of routing, i.e. they won't be able to be the default gateways for the clients on those VLAN's.

Yep this should work fine as long as your Router supports subinterfaces on its L3 ports or has some L2 interfaces which can be pure 802.1q trunks so you can create your VLAN Interfaces.

Which router do you have?

Your 4210 switch can have Layer 2 Vlan's and then have a Layer 2 Trunk which tags those VLANs connected to the router. You would then have subinterfaces on the router if the router port was a Layer 3 one or a Trunk if the router port was Layer 2.
