For my home lab, I just purchased the above referenced EtherSwitch module.  I get this pertaining to the card on boot:

Press RETURN to get started!

**I also have tried IOS 12.4T with image file "c2800nm-ipbase-mz.124-25f.bin"

I've looked at the following resources and performed the hardware installation verbatim according to the guide:

http://docstore.mik.ua/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/access/acs_mod/cis2600/hw_inst/wic_inst/wic_doc/vwicpdf.pdf

http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/interfaces-modules/network-modules/82288-es-mod-config.html?referring_site=RE&pos=1&page=http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/routers/3800-series-integrated-services-routers-isr/product_data_sheet...

http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/interfaces-modules/interface-cards/71820-routermodules.html

anyone have suggestions on where to go from here?  I reseated the card and looked at the connectors and everything looks good and doesn't smell like fried electronics.  No LEDs or lights on the EtherSwitch card.

Thanks!

UPDATE:  I noticed that I have 1 DIMM slot filled with ECC RAM, and 1 DIMM slot with non-ECC RAM.  IOS has thus disabled ECC RAM usage on this platform.  Thoughts on this interaction with the EtherSwitch?

Console into the router and reboot the router.  I want to see the entire boot-up sequence.

I have a funny feeling it's due to the "T" train IOS that's causing the issue.  Try using an "M" train of any 15.X version and see if there are any improvements.

Here we go.  This is how honest I am, I pasted the two startups both from a "T" train IOS and an "M" train IOS including my screwup when I didn't state the disk for the new boot statement.  Please note that the vendor I purchased the NME-XD-48 EtherSwitch module from was using the 15.1 "T" train series IOS to test with successfully the unit before shipment.

I thank you sincerely for taking the time to review my issues and help, It is an investment for me personally to purchase this item, so I need it to work.

Smart Init is enabled
smart init is sizing iomem
  ID            MEMORY_REQ                 TYPE
00FFFF           UNKNOWN port adapter

Things started going wrong here.  During the bootup, the ROMmon refuses to acknowledge the existence of the NME card.

PA-3-NOTSUPPORTED: PA in slot1 (Unknown (type 65535)) is not supported on this image.

The error message is very misleading, however, there is a Cisco Bug which also states the same symptom:  CSCsj26408

According to this bug, disable Smart Init by issuing the command "memory-size iomem 25" might fix the issue.

If not, then I'm suspecting the router could be faulty.

Leo --

Thanks very much for the response.  After implementing your suggestion (with no improvement unfortunately) I removed the router and took out the non-ECC DIMM RAM card to see if that would allow the router to recognize the ES card when ECC was enabled (did not help).  While out of my rack I reseated the ES card for the 6th time (not an exaggeration), and the router recognized the card!  I then backtracked and removed all the fixes and it still worked, thus the final solution being the card was not seated correctly.

Sorry for the trouble.

Glad to see you've finally got it working.

the unambiguous problem was 2 years suffered ! the result is simply to clean the connector dad mom . where the switch is connected . medical alcohol and everything will work !!!
