Hi,

We have a bunch of 2960s switches of which some of them can't be upgraded to IOS 15.0(2). It compared the show version commands and the ones that can be upgraded have

Model revision number : H0

While the ones that can't be upgraded have:

Model revision number : D0

The D0 switches can be upgraded to 15.0(1) without problems, but upgrade to 15.0(2) fails silently. It unpacks the image and than just fails over to the old image without error message.

Has anyone else experienced this behaviour en more importantly, does anyone have a fix for this?

Hi,

Not sure what is the part number for your switches, but see table-4 for all supported 2960s that can be upgraded to 15.

Hi

Thanks for the link, but this is for 15.0(1) and I don't have issues with that release. The upgrade only fails when I try to upgrade to 15.0(2) and above.

Did ypu find a solution to your problem? I have exactly the same problem with some switches. I think it has something to do with bootloader upgrading not working or not done with some older model revision numbers of the 2960S switches. See also my blog under

All of my 2960/G/S are running 15.0(2)SE4. I have no trouble upgrading them.

Can you post the upgrade process? I want to see where the process is failing.

Your output shows me the switch is booting IOS version 12.2(58)SE1. I don't see any attempts to upgrade the IOS nor the error message(s) pertaining to the failure to upgrade the IOS.

Correct, but it does start with uncompressing the 15.0(2) image, but after uncompressing it, it just goes to the next image. I also tried to use the tar image instead of the bin image, but that doesn't help either. I've already verified md5 checksums and they all match.

Ok, the output you've posted shows the switch attempting to load the IOS but it is failing because the IOS could potentially be corrupt.

Go to the Cisco website and search for the TAR file. Download the TAR file. [IMPORTANT] You need to compare the MD5 hash value of the TAR file you've just downloaded to the MD5 hash value found in the Cisco website. They need to match.

Once you've passed this stage, upgrade the IOS of the switch using this method: archive download-sw tftp://<TFTP IP address>/IOS.tar

I already tried to use the tar method, including the comparison of the md5 checksums and it's the same problem. I even tried copying over the image from a working switch, but to no avail.

Provide helpful information would certain help. You're going to tell me that the switch that is having trouble booting the specified IOS has an uptime of more than one year? Are you serious?

Sorry, honest mistake, we have quite a few of them around. This is the one from the switch I've been experimenting with. You'll see that it's running 15.0(1) at the moment which boots fine, but 15.0(2) does not. I did some tests with an offline switch as well, but as I'm not at the customer at the moment, I can't give you that output. This switch however has exactly the same issue.
