3524 inline power to SPA942 phone not working

My SPA942 phones do not power up when connected to the 3524-PWR-XL model switch.  There seems to only be two power settings on the interfaces, either auto or never.  I have "power inline auto" and the phones don't turn on.  Is it possible that there is some incompatibility issue here?

These switches don't support the PoE standard  802.3af only the old pre standard Cisco way.

These phones probably only work with 802.3af compliant devices.

Your next inexpensive switch up from the 3524 that will provide 802.3af power is the 3550 inline power switch.
