3650 upgrade help

Will Pettit

Level 1

Hi,

I've just installed a stack of 3650 switches. I upgraded them to the stable version (16.3.5b). Now, I may not have done this correctly, but they have booted up ok.

I copied the bin file to flash on all switches, and then set the boot command to use the bin file. (boot system flash:xxxxx).

I still don't understand the difference between bundle and install mode, but the switches are in bundle mode:

Switch Ports Model SW Version SW Image Mode
------ ----- ----- ---------- ---------- ----
* 1 52 WS-C3650-48PD 16.3.5b CAT3K_CAA-UNIVERSALK9 BUNDLE
2 52 WS-C3650-48PD 16.3.5b CAT3K_CAA-UNIVERSALK9 BUNDLE
3 52 WS-C3650-48PD 16.3.5b CAT3K_CAA-UNIVERSALK9 BUNDLE
4 52 WS-C3650-48PD 16.3.5b CAT3K_CAA-UNIVERSALK9 BUNDLE
5 52 WS-C3650-48PD 16.3.5b CAT3K_CAA-UNIVERSALK9 BUNDLE

Now I believe I should be using a command to install/expand the bin file, but can't get it it work.

If I use the request platform software package command I get this (when specifying the flash:filename):

--- Starting install local lock acquisition on switch 1 ---
Finished install local lock acquisition on switch 1

FAILED: switch local is not booted with provisioning file

Or this (when just specifying flash:)

--- Starting install local lock acquisition on switch 1 ---
Finished install local lock acquisition on switch 1

nvram_config: No such file or directory
nvram_config_bkup: No such file or directory
FAILED: File /usr/binos/conf/memleak.tcl is corrupt or is not a valid package.

The "software expand"command doesn't even exist.

So, what do I need to do, or will the switches be quite happy just booting off the bin file?

Thanks

Here's the dir flash:

Have you tried cleaning up flash with "request platform software package clean switch all, copy the .bin file to flash and then expand using "request platform software package expand"?

Hi Johnd2310,

Could you please kindly explain to me what will be the issues, I'm facing with the IOS upgrading from  cat3k_caa-universalk9.16.09.05.SPA to cat3k_caa-universalk9.16.12.08.SPA.bin.

I just upgrade to the stable version (16.12.08) because of my current version is bug issues in Power Supply module status.

mm-stg-dmz-sw>show version
Cisco IOS XE Software, Version 16.09.05
mm-stg-dmz-sw>show environment power

1B PWR-C2-250WAC LIT22362AL2 Supply Failure Bad n/a 250

So, I decide to upgrade 16.12.08 and start the process Now, I may not have upgrade done this correctly, but they have booted up ok but version is the still old one.

Please kindly see the following step:

The biggest difference between Install mode and Bundle mode is the amount of time it takes to boot up a switch or a stack.
So this is how it works:
1. In Bundle mode, when a switch boots up it will read the BIN file.
2. The switch or stack will then UNPACK (this bit is important) the BIN files into the temporary memory. (Emphasis on "temporary memory" because if the switch or stack reboots, the unpacked files go *poof!*.)
3. Once the files are unpacked, the switch or stack then finds correct file and boots the package files in the order they were meant to be done.
Now that's Bundle mode. In Install mode, the switch or stack boots up and loads the package file. That's it.
In Install mode, the switch or stack completely omits or bypass step 2.
So this is why it's highly recommended for the switch or stack to be loaded in Install mode.
Someone might want to ask this: What happens if the stack is mixed with Install & Bundle mode?
My answer is this: The Install mode will finish the boot-up first and the Bundle mode will be there when the cows come home.
Someone might also want to be "nasty" and as this: What happens if my switch master is in Bundle mode and the rest of the stack is in Install mode?
My answer to this is this: The switch master will never become "master".

I hope this makes sense.

Thanks guys. Ok, the "request platform software package expand ...." command worked.

My only remaining question is the boot command. It's currently set to boot system flash:xxxx.bin (which doesn't exist now). So is it a case of changing that to boot system flash:packages.conf and giving it a reload?

Yes, after expanding set the boot variable using boot system flash:packages.conf

Thanks

John
