3750x switch - dead?

Hello all,

I recently was trying to upgrade the OS on my two 3750-X stacked switches (both WS-C3750X-48PF-S) and the upgrade took successfully on the master switch but the other switch reboots to a "switch:" prompt.

Looking at the boot process it appears I've got a bad flash on this system.  I've tried the flash_init command and format to no avail.  I've also tried to boot off a USB drive on the device and it loads IOS but then the system executes a "%Software-forced reload" soon after and I'm back at the switch: prompt.  I know the IOS bin file is good since I used it to load onto a spare switch of the same model.

At this point I'm assuming I've got a hardware issue with the flash storage but since I can't RMA (no smartnet) what are my options? Do I just have a useless device at this point since I can't get it to boot IOS no matter what I've tried?  Is the flash storage replaceble?

Not that it really matters but I was trying to upgrade from "c3750e-ipbasek9-mz.122-55.SE5.bin" to "c3750e-universalk9npe-mz.150-2.SE10a.bin"

Hi Michael

you could try this doc it has a few steps in it from switch prompt , if its not working at all you could try format it and then test the flash with the commands in the doc see if it gets you anywhere , did you also try boot back in the old image as a test

I followed the link and tried some of the commands ... see below.  I also tried booting the old image from USB and it seems to load successfully but then it gives "%software-forced reload" message.

All things seem to point to a bad flash but what I'm not understanding is why when I boot from USB (ignoring flash) does it not load IOS completely.  If it did then the switch may still be usable. 

Is the flash on the 3750x switches removable/replaceable?

Hi,

Since you are upgrading from an standard image to a Universal image, it appears that the switch is not able to load the software license correctly and as a result it crashes.

Do both switches have the same license level?

In addition to Mark's comments and as a last resort, you can try reverting to the old image using xmodem.

Thanks for pointing out the license issue.  I wonder though that since the flash storage is unusable and that's the reason for the license error.  "Failure in creating/opening the store.'

It appears to be so, but can't be100% sure.  If you revert to the old image and the problem goes away, than I think we are on the right track with the license issue.

Licenses issues are pain to deal with.
