I have a Ws-C3850-48P stand alone that I'm trying to upgrade. The current image is:
cat3k_caa-platform.SPA.03.07.03E.pkg.
I'm trying to upgrade to :
cat3k_caa-universalk9.SPA.03.07.05.E.152-3.E5.bin
When I try the switch install command the operation fails, see below:
Switch#$stall file flash:cat3k_caa-universalk9.SPA.03.07.05.E.152-3.E5.bin
Preparing install operation ...
[1]: % Failed to determine package type for file flash:cat3k_caa-universalk9.SPA.03.07.05.E.152-3.E5.bin, operation aborted
Anyone have ideas as to a fix for this.

Old post but I figure if someone searches they can quickly see what worked for me... I too got that same message. I entered "switch 1" at the end and it kicked off without issue. note this is a single switch with no others provisioned...
Switch#software install file flash:cat3k_caa-universalk9.SPA.03.06
Preparing install operation ...
[1]: % Failed to determine package type for file flash:cat3k_caa-universalk9.SPA.03.06 (file not found on the server), operation aborted
full command example with "switch 1" at end:
Switch#software install file flash:cat3k_caa-universalk9.SPA.03.06.10.E.152-2.E10.bin switch 1
Preparing install operation ...
[1]: Starting install operation
[1]: Expanding bundle flash:cat3k_caa-universalk9.SPA.03.06.10.E.152-2.E10.bin
