HI Support community

I have a new pair of 3850 24 port switches I am trying to stack together.

at first the 2nd stack member was appearing as 'Waiting' in switch list.

Switch1#show switch detail
Switch/Stack Mac Address : 3820.565b.a500 - Local Mac Address
Mac persistency wait time: Indefinite
                                             H/W   Current
Switch#   Role    Mac Address     Priority Version  State
------------------------------------------------------------
*1       Active   3820.565b.a500     15     V06     Ready
 2       Member   3c5e.c303.8480     1      0       Waiting

I then assigned a priority to switch 1 and 2 and reloaded slot 2

Now switch 2 is showing up as Removed and I cannot seem to add it to stack.

Switch1#show switch
Switch/Stack Mac Address : 3820.565b.a500 - Local Mac Address
Mac persistency wait time: Indefinite
                                             H/W   Current
Switch#   Role    Mac Address     Priority Version  State
------------------------------------------------------------
*1       Active   3820.565b.a500     15     V06     Ready
 2       Member   0000.0000.0000     0      0       Removed

the licensing is ipbase.

Please help.

Hi,

Could You please verify whether both the Switches are running same Version of IOS ?

Regards,

Gurudath K S

HI Guradath

rebooted switch 1 and switch 2 now appears as 'Waiting' again.

switch versions are same - 03.02.02.SE

on reboot the second switch gives the following error.

'Switch 2 has a platform mismatch with the stack. Only on changing to a compatible bandwidth mode will the switch join.'

Regards

RussellB

Hey

Your on an early deployment ED release you may have hit a bug or the image could be corrupted  you could try put the switches on a later recommended ios-xe an MD release 3.6.4E(MD)

couple of things to check before re-image

do the switches operate ok in standalone , just when you try stack them there is an issue ?

is the SDM template the same on each switch --- show sdm prefer

can you post the full image 03.02.02.SE  do these match exactly down to the major/minor numbers ? If they don't they could cause an issue when trying to sync

Thanks Mark
Dont have remote hands on switch at the moment so am unable to check if switch runs as standalone.
Also unable to check SDM for 2nd switch.
Seemed to be that 2nd switch was running identical version 03.02.02.SE but in bundle mode so software auto-upgrade did not work.
I then upgraded switch 1 to 03.03.05SE and changed it to bundle mode, switch 2 was then able to form stack but with version mismatch.
Changed switch 1 back to INSTALL mode and issued software auto-upgrade command.
Switch 2 instantly installed upgraded and reloaded.
Switch 2 didn't return to stack and is now appearing up as 'Provisioned' in show switch.

Switch1#show switch detail
Switch/Stack Mac Address : 3820.565b.a500 - Local Mac Address
Mac persistency wait time: Indefinite
H/W Current
Switch# Role Mac Address Priority Version State
------------------------------------------------------------
*1 Active 3820.565b.a500 15 V06 Ready
2 Member 0000.0000.0000 0 0 Provisioned

Stack Port Status Neighbors
Switch# Port 1 Port 2 Port 1 Port 2
--------------------------------------------------------
1 DOWN DOWN None None

did you get this resolved ?

I would break the stack and put the image directly on each switch make sure they operate in standalone ok first then stack them back together and get a console on it and record exactly what happens when they try to stack

HI Mark

Ended up replacing switch 2 with another and rolling switch 1 back to 03.02.02.SE.

Stack was formed instantly.

Original switch 2 will not operate as stand alone, seems to have an OS issue. (as per attached)

Not sure if I created this problem or it was faulty from start.

I will need to wait until I can get a tech savvy resource on site that may be able to load new IOS image.
