Hope to help

I recently had a similar issue with my 4507R with Sup IV.
In my case, both supervisors have two gig ports, but I can only use 1 of them on each sup. If I try to configure a 2nd gig port on one of the Sups, it gives me an error saying that the port is only active if the switch only has 1 supervisor. Looks like you may be hitting a similar situation.

Hello Kumar
You have to understand the internal organization of the 4500 Series.
With classis chassis 4506 & 4507 and classic modules
You have 32 internal 1 gigabit channels
Two of 32 are used by the supervisor for the 1 Gig uplinks
If you have two supervisors you have still only 2 internal channels but 4 interfaces on the front.
The remaining 30 internal channels are in groups of 6 for the 5 slots used.
Result in 6 gig in and 6 gig out per slot, don't care about type of line card with 6, 24 or 48 interfaces.
The Sup 5-10GE can serve up to 48 internal 1 gigabit channels and 2x 10 gig channels for the uplinks for the 4510 chassis.
But the rules are the same.
The two 2x 10 gig channels are used for the uplinks
If you have 2 supervisors with 4 10GE interfaces you can sill only use two.
Here is an additional trick.
The four 1 gig interfaces on the 5-10GE borrow 4 channels from the slot 10.
Per configuration can you select either to use the 4x 1 gig interfaces on the supervisor or the full performance of all 6x 1 gigabit channels on slot 10.
But again if have two supervisors 5-10GE wit total 8x 1 gig interfaces on the front you can only 4 of them use.
Even you can't use in 4507 Chassis the slots 8-10, the performance reserved for this slot is lost.
Similar case with the sup5 without 10GE.
They can serve up to 48 internal 1 gigabit channels including all up links.
If you use 2 supervisor of this type you borrow 4 channels from the slot 10.
Only in this case you can use all 4 uplinks on both supervisors.
So the remain two channels at slot 10 can only serve a 4302 line card with tow 1 gig uplink.
So in my point of view the supervisor looks like a memory multiplexer.
Or like Cisco says the channels do simultaneous shared memory access.

Hi Andy,
Awesome post. Very interesting. This helps us to understand the blocking architecture of these models.
Can you please share the link from where we can these subtle details, so that we will be able to plan the design, to avoid these kind of last moment surprise during implementation

Hi Andy
I understand now and Thank you very much

Hi
My summary is the experience of 10 year working from Catalyst 4000 up to the current 4500E series. Unlucky wise Cisco never writes an architecture white paper like for 6500 Series exist. So there is no link to present how document the facts in simple way.
