I currently have a 6506-E with a single SUP 720 as one of my distributions for access switches and last night I had an issue with a TM_DATA_PARITY_ERROR and sent this SUP into ROMMON mode. Our after market support stated this could be an environmental issue that caused this but this switch has been running for years in the same closet and I'm not aware of any environmental changes.
I'm monitoring the SUP to see if the occurs again but I was curious on how to swap the current SUP with a replacement if I have to go this route. If I have to swap I would most likely get the same mode SUP 720. Would I just need to remove the old SUP and put the new one in along with the old flash cards and be good to go?
Thank you

TM_DATA_PARITY_ERROR - this is more of a BUG
Not necessarily required any change, the bug has developed the symptoms. the suggestion here is either old or new SUP card upgrade and load the config if you have a backup copy of the config to restore back services.
Since it is ROMMON mode you have the option to upgrade now.
try tp upgrade and let us know.
Note: SUP 720 is too old and end of the sale and support long back. if you looking to upgrade looks at new supervision cards SUP2T at least for now to resolve the issue

What does "try tp upgrade" mean? Does that mean try upgrading to a known fixed code version on my current SUP?
I was also curious about the fiber modules I have installed in slots 1 and 2. If I get a new SUP and insert it without my saved configuration, do I need to remove the SFPs out of modules 1 and 2 since the new SUP won't have my running config on it out of the box?
Thank you for such a quick reply by the way!

There are a couple of options here : lets start with what you have
1. with the existing SUP 720 in ROMMON Mode, do dir if you find the image in flash
2. boot flash:/image.bin (change the image name here based on the file available in the flash)
Once it boots success, please post complete output of boot process and show version output (once you get # prompt)
Then we can discuss an upgrade or move to new modules.

Ok. At the moment the SUP is up and running and working right now. Our 3rd party TAC support was able to help with this last night with getting boot image to work in ROMMON.
I can get the information you are requesting tomorrow if you don't mind.

Sure when you get a chance please to provide so we can suggest an upgrade to the new IOS or if you like you can change the supervisor if required.
what is the TAC suggestion? upgrade or replace?
01-10-2021 11:57 AM
TAC support said if this only occurs once this could just be something with environmentals and can be ignored; based on this document: https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/switches/catalyst-6500-series-switches/116135-trouble-6500-parity-00.html
This 6506 has been in place for years in this same closet and I just have a weird feeling that it's just some environmental but maybe it could be. I've recently upgraded the UPS that this runs off but it's been running fine for several months.

Show us the exact error message.
Post the complete output to the following commands:
sh version sh module
NOTE:
I want to see everything except the hostname and the IP address. Do not edit anything out.
