6509 Redundant Sup720 - Slave boots into Rommon

Hi. I'm fairly new to networking and need to migrate an old core to a new core. I have a 6509-e Switch that I had an RMA on one of my 720 sup cards. After receiving the sup card I swapped my slave out with the new one, expecting it to boot into ios. It booted into Rommon. I tried to boot the image manually and it did the same thing. I also tried to boot from my flash and, again, booted into Rommon.

Questions:

1. What am i missing here?

2. If i confreg and change the boot to boot from image it tells me i need to reset or power cycle first. Will this reset the entire switch? As this is production I'd rather not.

I am at home now, but I can supply any logs/hardware model/configs tomorrow. I thought I would see if this is an easy fix.

Console into the redundant supervisor card and reboot.  Post the entire bootup process.

Thanks, so if I console in and reset this won't effect the rest of the switch? I wouldn't think so, but like i said i'm fairly new to this. Thanks

If the redundant Sup720 is still in ROMmon then resetting it won't affect the rest of the chassis.

You also need to load the same exact IOS in the new sup to work in SSO mode:

I tried this already. The problem is even if I tell it to boot off my flash with the same ios as the active it starts to boot and then goes back to rommon. I will get the logs tomorrow and post.

I'm thinking i just need to change the confreg and reset, just wasn't sure if that would effect the rest of the switch.

Hi Chris,

Answering you 2nd question  - this will reset only the supervsor which is in ROMMON, the one which console you are using.

Reza and leolaohoo provided correct suggestions. One more reason for boot to fail could be that route processor confreg is incorrect. You can fix that this  way:

-  do manual boot with "boot" command and when you see "passed ownership to route processor", send a break sequence. This will put you into RP ROMMON. 

- there execute

     confreg 0x2102

     sync

- then "reset" to test.

Console logs showing boot sequence would help to determine the cause of the issue.

How is this different than what I did? I changed the confreg to 0x2102 and reset.

Is rommon and RP rommon 2 different things?

There RP and SP.  What you originally changed was SP, now do the same as Ivan recommended for RP.

Also, if this does not work.  Try loading a new IOS into your new sup.  From what you posted, the existing IOS on the sup is very old and might be corrupted.

If you see the IOS, can you issue the boot command:
