Hi all,
I've just picked up a new Cisco 857w router and I'm having some diffuculty setting it up.
As far as I understand the device ships with minimal configuration already present.
I am able to connect via console and have access to the IOS.
Cisco IOS Software, C850 Software (C850-ADVSECURITYK9-M), Version 12.4(6)T10, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc4)
I'm having trouble with DHCP. According to the documentation it shipped with it is configured as a DHCP server but it doesn't seem to be issuing IP addresses on its ethernet ports.
I have enabled the ports (no shutdown on those interfaces)
The green LED on eth 1 lights up when I connect a cable to my laptop
The laptop is configured to have an IP address assigned automatically by the DHCP server for its wired ethernet port.
So, the question is, Do I need to configure the router as a DHCP server? I am trying to find its IP address so I can connect to the GUI.
Also, theres a clicking/switching sound coming from it at regular intervals roughly once a minute, is this normal?
Thanks

Hi,
I don't see why we should use a bvi here as the interface vlan is playing this role for all ports on the switch module.
Regards.

- There is a BVI configured on that router and VLAN 1.
- So bridge route command is used to enable routing of protocols within a bridge group in this case "1"

Hi Guys, I wont have access to the router until thursday, I'll post again then. Thanks for the help so far!

Hi again,
I've disabled the BVI as its not needed at this point.
This is what Ive got, as you can see still no IP being assigned to fa1

Hi,
this interface is supposed to be a L2 interface so this is the vlan 1 interface which routes and it is up/up with an IP address so you can't still get an IP address on a PC connected into this f1 port ?
Regards.
Alain.

Can you post your full config please?
12-04-2011 05:51 PM
Hi Mohammad,
After much more messing around I decided to remove its config and start again. I thought I'd try the SDM v2.5 to try access the router but no luck there either.
The GUI installation process is unable to access the router. I followed the instructions on the help page which gave it a basic config to get started as you can see below. If I can get the GUI to at least see the router I should be ok to get some progress.
Thanks

Hi,
You have no IP address assigned so you can't communicate with the router.
Put an IP address under Vlan 1 interface and then you can try out SDM.
Regards.
Alain

Ok here you go, try this other than your usual general settings:
conf t
!
service dhcp
!
ip dhcp pool DHCP-POOL (or whatever you want to call it)
network 192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0
default-router 192.168.1.1
dns-server xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
domain-name "whatever domain you want"
!
ip dhcp excluded-address 192.168.1.1 192.168.1.xxx
bridge irb
!
interface vlan 1
bridge-group 1
no shut
!
interface BVI1
ip address 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0 (or whatever you want)
no shut
!
interface range fa0-3
no shut
!
ip classless (incase this is not already there)
ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (this would be your gateway)
!
bridge 1 protocol ieee
bridge 1 route ip
!
ip http server (this should enable the http server
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Another way you can do it is like this:
conf t
!
service dhcp
!
ip dhcp pool DHCP-POOL (or whatever you want to call it)
network 192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0
default-router 192.168.1.1
dns-server xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
domain-name "whatever domain you want"
!
ip dhcp excluded-address 192.168.1.1 192.168.1.xxx
!
ip cef
!
interface fa4
ip address xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (This would be your WAN information)
ip nat outside
!
interface vlan 1
ip address 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0 (or whatever you want)
ip nat inside
!
ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (default gateway)
!
ip http server (or)
ip http secure server
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
this is just a basic config and then ofcourse you have to do other stuff like setup NAT, ACL's VTY, AAA etc. Let me know if you have any questions.

Hi Mohammad,
Good news, I've finally managed to get it working.
After I removed the config completely.
I configured VLAN1 and DHCP as per the second post in this thread and router finally assigned a IP addresses to its ethernet ports. Ive also installed the SDM now. Oddly enough, the clicking sound has now also stopped!
Just one last question, the SDM seems to be quite slow via HTTP, is this normal?
12-12-2011 08:28 AM
Cool congratulations. Not sure about the SDM I have never used it.
12-12-2011 08:29 AM
Hi,
Try this:
ip http timeout-policy idle 600 life 86400 requests 10000
Regards.
