861W can't ping or respond to pings beyond IP subnet

I'm really REALLY hoping this is something stupid.  I have an 861W on a 10.1.1.0/24 subnet - only the f4 interface is configured and connected.  It has the correct subnet and the correct gateway configured for the subnet.  Anything on that subnet can ping the f4 interface and the f4 interface can ping anything on the subnet.  But if the other host is outside that subnet the 861W cannot ping it nor can that host ping the f4 interface.  I do NOT have RIP enabled, just cef and ip source route (the latter enabled by default).  I tried disabling cef but no change.  We want to use this 861W as a VPN endpoint.

Thanks in advance,

Steve Miller

Hi,

post output of :

sh ip ro   you must have a route to this subnet to reply if not directly connected

sh ip arp

Thanks Alain

,

Here's the output:

Codes: L - local, C - connected, S - static, R - RIP, M - mobile, B - BGP
D - EIGRP, EX - EIGRP external, O - OSPF, IA - OSPF inter area
       N1 - OSPF NSSA external type 1, N2 - OSPF NSSA external type 2
       E1 - OSPF external type 1, E2 - OSPF external type 2
       i - IS-IS, su - IS-IS summary, L1 - IS-IS level-1, L2 - IS-IS level-2
       ia - IS-IS inter area, * - candidate default, U - per-user static route
       o - ODR, P - periodic downloaded static route, + - replicated route

Gateway of last resort is not set

10.0.0.0/8 is variably subnetted, 2 subnets, 2 masks
C        10.1.1.0/24 is directly connected, FastEthernet4
L        10.1.1.227/32 is directly connected, FastEthernet4

So without RIP enabled I have to have a route to every subnet outside of the immediate one?

Hi,

So without RIP enabled I have to have a route to every subnet outside of the immediate one?

you must have a route for destination not directly connected whether with a routing protocol like RIP or a static route.

By the way I would enable cef back again.

MY hope/wish was granted - it was something stupid.  Guess I just don't configure routers often enough.  A default route to the default gateway for that subnet did the trick.  I guess a default gateway by itself is insufficient.

Thanks again Alain and a very Happy New Year!

Steve

Also yes I enabled cef and ip source route again after discovering that disabling them made no difference.

Hi Steve ,

Happy New Year to you too.
