adding new switch to VTP domain

Hallo everybody.

i am learning VTP and been stuck to a question which couldn't find any answer to.

suppose i have VTP domain running with a VTP domain Name (TEST) and the current revision number of the server is 10, suddenly due to requirements i have to add another Switch to the domain, would this new switch with a different VTP domain name but higher revision number be able to update the VTP domain ?

@mohammadnouman86  hello,

if you add a new switch to a vtp as client or server if it is in the same domain .. with higher revision .. it will synchronize all other switches.

Just a bit for learning:

Server mode: Can create, modify, delete vlans on vtp domain

Client Mode: Cant create, modify or delete vlan.

Transparent mode: Can create vlan locally but dont propagate it for other swiches. But can send vtp packets received on domain to other peers.

No, two switches in different domains will not be able to update each other:

"When the switch receives a summary advertisement packet, the switch compares the VTP domain name to its own VTP domain name. If the name is different, the switch simply ignores the packet. If the name is the same, the switch then compares the configuration revision to its own revision. If its own configuration revision is higher or equal, the packet is ignored. If it is lower, an advertisement request is sent."

As Bradley already noted, the answer is no, but that because the existing VTP domain (vers. 1 or 2) already has a domain name defined and the to be added switch has a different domain name defined. If, though, the switch to be added had the same domain name, under vers. 1 or 2, it's VLAN database would replace the existing VTP domain's VLAN database if the newly added switch had a higher revision number and the switch was in either "server" or "client" mode. It would also not update the domain if the VTP mode was "transparent" or "off". (NB: much of the foregoing was also described by Jaderson, except for the "off" mode, which is a later VTP feature.)

VTP version 3, is different and newly added switches cannot overwrite the VTP information.
