Hello,
I am preparing to install an ASA5505 for a Dr office. At the same time I am going to install a VoIP system. Does the ASA have to connect directly to the ISP device or can I put a router in between so the phones don't have to route through the VPN?

Maybe I should also note that the VoIP system is not Cisco.

It is certainly possible to place a router so that the ISP connects to the router and the router connects to both the ASA and the phone system. Whether this is a good choice depends on your outlook and the outlook of the people who run the Dr Office on the potential impact of traffic entering their network which bypasses the security device that protects the network.

Yeah, I don't think I can take any security risks here with the government standards. Is there a way to get the phones in a dmz in a way that would not pose any risk to data security?

It should certainly be possible to assign the IP addressing used by phones to the DMZ.
