In order  to enable ASDM, follow this steps in the router configuration.

Assign an IP address to the router:      ip address x.x.x.x y.y.y.y

Create a username:    ( username privilege 15 password 0 )

Enable Http server:    ( Ip http server)

Enable Http secure-server :      (Ip http secure-server )

Enable local authentication :    ip http authentication local

Set a enable password :    ( Enable secret cisco)

Enable local Authentication :

Line vty 0 15

   Login local

   privilege level 15

   transport input telnet
   transport input telnet ssh

Then  to access the SDM, you have to access from the bowser and enter the router's IP

ASDM is the GUI for the ASA firewall. For switches you can use the embedded Device-Manager (if installed).
