Basic Learnings - SFP Question

Hi Guys,

A simple question.

I have a switch that has 48 x 10 GB SFP ports and 4 x 40 GB SFP Ports (presuming uplink ports).

If I connected a 1GB RJ45 SFP to one of the vacant 10 GB ports it does not work. Could anyone explain why but please keep this basic as I am trying to learn?

The goal was to connect my laptop to the switch and obtain an IP via DHCP.

Hello,

which switch model do you have ? Can you post a 'show version' ?

Basically, you have to configure a 10GB port to operate in 1GB mode. Since I don't know which platform you have, here is an example for the 4500 series:

Switch(config)# hw-module module m port-group p select [gigabitethernet | tengigabitethernet]
