C3560CX EEE Configuration

Hello All,

I am struggling to understand how EEE-"Energy Efficient Ethernet" works on Cisco3560cx. While doing some research I came across with some docs from Cisco. Reading other articles on EEE, I understand that when both end devices have EEE enabled it will start negotiating and put like in LPI mode when there is no traffic to save "Energy" I believe.

I would like to understand the output of #show eee counters.

I have my device-3560cx is directly connected to ISP device via RJ45 on 100mbps link. Cisco3560cx comes with EEE enabled by default. In this case ISP device does not support EEE so its not negotiating and when running #show eee status int gi 0/1 you will see status as "Disagreed"

Below is basic output from the 3560cx for your understanding.

#show version
Cisco IOS Software, C3560CX Software (C3560CX-UNIVERSALK9-M), Version 15.2(4)E2, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc2)

Switch Ports Model SW Version SW Image
------ ----- ----- ---------- ----------
* 1 12 WS-C3560CX-8TC-S 15.2(4)E2 C3560CX-UNIVERSALK9-M

#show eee status int gi 0/1
Gi0/9 is up
EEE(efficient-ethernet): Disagreed
Rx LPI Status : None
Tx LPI Status : None
Wake Error Count : 0
EEE Enabled (ASIC) : yes
Tx LPI Active (ASIC) : yes
Rx LPI Detected (ASIC) : yes

#show eee counters
ASIC #0
---- ---
LP Active 1G : 137931143
LP Transitioning 1G : 2919
LP Active Tx 100M : 3222060496
LP Transitioning Tx 100M : 805
LP Active Rx 100M : 77990043
LP Transitioning Rx 100M : 1363

Now as you can see so much activity when running #show eee counters. I would like to know what's each output mean. In this case, only one device has EEE and its not negotiating with other device. So what's causes these EEE counters to increment? Would that affect in any traffic loss?

Please answer/share knowledge if you have come across or implemented EEE.

Good discussion - its been long i looked this kind of requirement, people more focus these features in whee heavy Power consumption take place, so every penny count to save money and cost can be brought down to give good services. Not that your case is valid. just my views.

coming to your issue  - there are some limitations and restrictions required both parties need to handshake correctly to work.

EEE(efficient-ethernet): Disagreed  (what is the other side. as you mentioned other side not supported or no control on that device, since he is 3rd party)

here is a good document old and new one still good :  (maybe different product - but a good explanation bottom one)
