C9300-48P/C9300-NM-4G/1000baseSX connected to WS-C4507R-E/WS-X4306-GB/1000baseSX with UDLD enabled going in err-disable

DEENA SLOAN

Level 1

We have installed a C9300-48P and the downlink is on C9300-NM-4G/1000baseSX which is connected via MM.

The link connects to WS-C4507R-E and the uplink is on WS-X4306-GB/1000baseSX. UDLD is enabled globally on the

WS-C4507R-E and C9300-48P and  is constantly going into err-disable then recovering which is causing the 4507R-E HSRP to constantly having state changes from speak to standby then back when the link has recovered. All other links

on the WS-C4507R-E and C9300-48P are fine and not getting the error. Has anyone had this problem when installing the C9300-48P? We are going to do some troubleshooting on this next week by turning off UDLD on the 2 ports on each

end in question. At this time we have installed 4 devices (C9300-48P) and all 4 are having the same problem. I am questioning the WS-C4507R-E end due to it being a GBIC card and the C9300-48P is an SFP module maybe having

a compatibility problem and I cannot find anything on this. Please help!

witch(config)# udld message time interval

Configures the time between UDLD probe messages on ports that are in advertisement mode and are currently determined to be bidirectional; valid values are from 1 to 90 seconds.

Note Prior to Cisco IOS Release 12.2(31)SGA, the time interval is 7 to 90 seconds. With
Cisco IOS Release 12.2(31)SGA, the time interval is 1 to 90 second.

The no udld message command returns the default value (15 seconds).

First of all its bad way error disable recovery due to UDLD disabled port.

Is the port are in  Trunk  ? can you post the configuration both the side to have look.

Disabling UDLD works, but that is bad way and not recommended to disable as best practice.

Yes the Interfaces are trunked. Here is the config for the ports:

WS-C4507-RE Interface G5/4 (We currently have the interface shutdown)

interface GigabitEthernet5/4
 description ***S2080 A/L***
 switchport trunk native vlan 1000
 switchport mode trunk
 service-policy output voip

WS-C4507-RE

udld enable

errdisable recovery cause udld
errdisable recovery cause link-flap
errdisable recovery interval 900

C9300-48P   G1/1/4    (We currently have the interface shutdown)

interface GigabitEthernet1/1/4
 description ***R061 (SEC) A/L***
 switchport trunk native vlan 1000
 switchport mode trunk
 shutdown

 service-policy output voip
 ip dhcp snooping trust

Global for C9300-48P : udld enable

Error disable recovery is on due to standard practices of this network.

Do you have VLAN 1000 available on Cat 4K.

can you post show udld on both the sides ?

4K Router Yes we have vlan 1000 on all of the network equip. That is our management Vlan.
Interface Gi5/4
---
Port enable administrative configuration setting: Follows device default
Port enable operational state: Enabled
Current bidirectional state: Unknown
Current operational state: Link down
Message interval: 7000 ms
Time out interval: 5000 ms

Port fast-hello configuration setting: Disabled
Port fast-hello interval: 0 ms
Port fast-hello operational state: Disabled
Neighbor fast-hello configuration setting: Disabled
Neighbor fast-hello interval: Unknown

On the c9300 UDLD config.
Interface Gi1/1/4
---
Port enable administrative configuration setting: Follows device default
Port enable operational state: Enabled
Current bidirectional state: Unknown
Current operational state: Link down
Message interval: 15000 ms
Time out interval: 5000 ms

Port fast-hello configuration setting: Disabled
Port fast-hello interval: 0 ms
Port fast-hello operational state: Disabled
Neighbor fast-hello configuration setting: Disabled
Neighbor fast-hello interval: Unknown

Hello Deena,

the C4507-R side is using a faster message interval 7 seconds instead of 15 seconds this might explain why this side is the one going in errordisable mode.

Interface Gi5/4
---
Port enable administrative configuration setting: Follows device default
Port enable operational state: Enabled
Current bidirectional state: Unknown
Current operational state: Link down
>>>>>Message interval: 7000 ms
Time out interval: 5000 ms

On the c9300 UDLD config.
Interface Gi1/1/4
---
Port enable administrative configuration setting: Follows device default
Port enable operational state: Enabled
Current bidirectional state: Unknown
Current operational state: Link down
>>>>Message interval: 15000 ms
Time out interval: 5000 ms

Next time try to use the same timer on the Cat9300 side. I think you can set it at interface level.

Hope to help

Giuseppe

Thank you I will try that in my troubleshooting.

Hello Deena,

which side is going in errordisable caused by UDLD the newer C9300-48P SFP port or the C4507-R GBIC port? or both?

>> on the WS-C4507R-E and C9300-48P are fine and not getting the error. Has anyone had this problem when installing the C9300-48P? We are going to do some troubleshooting on this next week by turning off UDLD on the 2 ports on each

To verify L2 and L1 compatibility you should try to disable UDLD both ends of one link.

Then you can try to run an extended ping over the link with extended options using a payload like AAAA.

Edit:

either you have L1 issues and you get an high error ratio in the pings and this would explain why UDLD fails or there is an interoperability issue at UDLD protocol level. Look for timers used by the two devices.

Hope to help

Giuseppe
