Can 10GB NIC auto-negotiate with 1GB ethernet switches

Hi,

I've a server which we need to upgrade to 10GB NIC, but the backbone network ethernet switch are only supported 1GB.

My question is, whether the 10GB NIC can auto-negotiate (associate) with the 1GB ethernet switch?

Thanks.

Depends on the server's NIC.

We have a somehwat similar issue with servers that PXE boot. Within the OS, the server NIC can run 10Gb/s. Once it reboots into PXE mode, it tries to autonegotiate to 100Mb/s.

My question would be why are you upgrading the nic to 10 gig if the switch only supports 1 gig ?
