Can I upgrade from IOS version 12.2(53)SE2 to 15.0(2)SE9?

I have a  C3750E switch running IOS version 12.2(53)SE2. Can I do a direct upgrade to version 15.0(2)SE9, or do I need to install an earlier version first?

You can go direct as long as you have enough memory and flash space to support the new image.

Thanks, Reza. I'll have about 4 MB left in flash after uploading the new image, but before deleting the old image (which I typically do not do until about after a week of using the new image). Will that be enough free memory in flash?

Hi,

4MB flash is not enough to load the new IOS. For example, the image below is about 14MB and so you need to make some room on the flash before trying this.

c3750e-ipbasek9-mz.122-55.SE10.bin

I would say, you want to make room for 16MB. Just to be sure.

Also, the requirement for DRAM is 256MB.

Reza,

So the c3750e-universalk9-mz.150-2.SE9.bin image is about 19 MB. Before I uploaded it to flash it I had about 25 MB free. After uploading it I have about 4 MB free in flash...so I'm wondering if that is an acceptable amount of free space to have left in flash? I'm also a little confused because the c3750e-universalk9-mz.122-53.SE2.bin image I have on their now looks like it is only using 512 bytes, but when I look up that image file on the Cisco Software Download page it looks like that image is about 13 MB. The c3750e-universalk9-mz.122-53.SE2.bin image I have on there now may have been what came with the switch, but I don't know why the size is so small. I would like to upload the 15.2 image file, and delete the current 12.2 image after about a week and gain about 13 MB back in flash, but that won't work if the image is really only 512 bytes. Is there something about this that I'm just not understanding?

Also, how can I determine how much DRAM I have on my switch?

Hi,

4MB free space is enough. Also, I am not sure why the current image would only show as being 512 bytes.  Usually that image should be around 12 or 13MB. Maybe you are looking at the wrong file.  "Dir" or "show flash" you should you all the files on the flash. Also, if you issue "sh ver" it should tell you how much physical memory you have on the switch. 3750e is a few years old and I will not be surprised if it does not come with 512MB memory.

Reza,

The first line is the output from the "show flash" command showing that the 12.2 image file is 512 bytes, correct?

#sho flash

7 drwx 512 Feb 28 1993 19:16:20 -05:00 c3750e-universalk9-mz.122-53.SE2

Also, these are from my "show version" command. Does either one of these lines show the amount of DRAM the switch has?:

Cisco WS-C3750X-48 (PowerPC405) processor (revision A0) with 262144K bytes of memory.

512K bytes of flash-simulated non-volatile configuration memory.

Cisco WS-C3750X-48 (PowerPC405) processor (revision A0) with 262144K bytes of memory.

Ok, its a 3750x with 256 MB of memory.  So, you should be able to upgrade with no issues.

Thanks, Reza!

Hi rweir,

Can you let me know if you were able to upgrade please. I am planning to upgrade 3750X switch from 12.2(53)SE2 to 15.02.se9.

Can I upgrade it directly from 12.2(53)SE2 to 15.02.se9 or should I use some other ios versions in between

Krishna K

Hi Krishna3010,

I was able to upgrade directly from 12.2(53)SE2 to 15.0(2)SE9.

Thanks rweir for update.

My upgrade is scheduled for next week

BTW, that's not the image, that's a directory entry.
